Carling Cup 2008 trophy

Holders Tottenham will face Newcastle in the pick of the ties in the Carling Cup third round.

Elsewhere, last season's losing finalists Chelsea face a tricky trip to Portsmouth and Manchester United host Middlesbrough in another all-Premier League clash.

Blackburn meet Everton in a repeat of their opening-day of the season clash, which Rovers won 3-2.

Crewe have been handed a lucrative trip to Anfield to take on Liverpool with both clubs enjoying a long-standing relationship with each other.

Arsenal will take on Sheffield United at Emirates Stadium, while West Ham travel to Watford.

Big-spending Queens Park Rangers have been paired with Aston Villa, while Wigan take on Ipswich Town.

Northampton have been rewarded for their impressive win over Bolton with another top-flight test in the shape of Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

There is also a big South Wales derby in store when Swansea welcome rivals Cardiff to the Liberty Stadium.

Irbahima Sonko and Dave Kitson will come up against their former club Reading when Stoke host Steve Coppell's men at the Britannia Stadium.
