Sri Lanka beat Pakistan by 5 wkts
A mixture of youth and experience inspired Sri Lanka to an impressive five-wicket victory over Pakistan in the Canada Twenty20 final in King City.
Sanath Jayasuriya, 39, blazed 40 runs at the top of the order to help chase down the 133 target set by Pakistan after Ajantha Mendis, 23, had earlier taken 3-23.
Chamara Kapugedera struck the winning runs with six balls remaining as Sri Lanka recorded their first-ever win over Pakistan in the Twenty20 format to lift the Quadrangular Trophy.
After losing the toss, Pakistan were put into bat at the Canadian ground and only Salman Butt made any real score of note - the aggressive opener blazed 44 of 41 balls.
Chasing 133 to win, Sri Lanka flew out of the traps from ball one as Jayasuriya and fellow opener Mahela Udawatte (25) put on 66 in seven overs.
The pair took advantage of a wayward Pakistan attack with Shoaib Akhtar, Sohail Tanvir and Umar Gul being hit to all parts of the King City ground in front of a 9,000-strong crowd at King City.
Jayasuriya was particularly harsh on Akhtar, flicking the recalled paceman for four in his first over and then pulling him for consecutive sixes over midwicket.
Desperate Pakistan, who had won the group match between the two sides by three wickets on Saturday, turned to spin and Shahid Afridi dismissed Udawatte while Shoaib Malik accounted for Jayasuriya.
But despite losing skipper Mahela Jayawardene for just five, Kaushalya Weeraratne (12 not out) and Kapugedera (17no) saw Sri Lanka home.
