Furyk: Joint leader

Jim Furyk and Padraig Harrington shared the lead after the first round of the PGA Grand Slam of Golf in Bermuda.

Both men recorded two-under-par rounds of 68 at the Mid Ocean Club on the island to share the lead halfway through the 36-hole event.

South Africans Retief Goosen and Trevor Immelman follow in the four-man tournament - Goosen on level par after shooting 70 while Immelman had a disastrous round when finishing six over.

The event is organised to see the winners of the season's four major coming together to fight it out, but with Harrington bagging the Open and USPGA Championship while US Open winner Tiger Woods is injured, only two winners were in the field.

Masters champion Immelman joins double-major winner Harrington, while American Furyk and Goosen got the nod to take part in the lucrative contest.

Chances

Furyk made the most of his chance with three birdies, one on the 18th, and an eagle in his 68, which also contained three dropped shots.

Harrington was one over at the turn after a birdie and a double bogey, but three birdies in his last five holes shot him into a tie for the lead with Furyk.

The Irishman will now have the chance to add another honour to his list in a wonderful season as the players head into Wednesday's second and final round.

Goosen still has a shout just two shots behind after a sedate round with two birdies and two bogeys, but compatriot Immelman had a round to forget.

Hitting the turn one over, Immelman birdied the 10th to go level for the round before a shocking run saw him drop six shots in six holes.

A double-bogey seven at the 11th was followed by a bogey at 12, and after two pars another dropped shot at 15 was backed up by a double at 16 as Immelman came home in a woeful 41.
