An emotional Garcia celebrates with father Victor
Sergio Garcia has climbed to a career-high of number three in the world after his triumph at the Castello Masters over the weekend.
The Spaniard, who has edged past Vijay Singh into third spot, recorded his first European Tour victory since 2005 at an event that he helped host at the Club de Campo del Mediterraneo - the course he grew up playing and where his father is still the professional.
The 28-year-old eventually won by a three-shot margin over Swede Peter Hedblom and could not hide his delight after justifying his status as red-hot favourite heading in.
"It feels absolutely awesome," he stated afterwards. "It just feels very special and means so much.
"Just getting the tournament here was special for me and my family but to play the way I did and win it is awesome.
"I had so many positive comments throughout the week from everybody and I hope this can be a great tournament for many years to come."
Garcia was, though, quick to dedicate his success to compatriot Seve Ballesteros who remains in intensive care in a Madrid hospital after a third operation to treat a brain tumour.
"I couldn't help but think of Seve," an emotional Garcia added. "I'm sending all my love to him and his family and hope he recovers soon.
"I hope this victory helps him to get a little better."
