Colombia international Hugo Rodallega is set to join Wigan, according to the striker's Mexican club Necaxa.
The 23-year-old showed his quality by setting a South American qualification record with 11 goals in Colombia's 2005 FIFA Under 20 World Cup campaign.
He went on to make his international debut at senior level in a friendly against Venezuela and he has gone on to win 21 caps for the country.
Officials from his club Necaxa now claim to have agreed a deal with Steve Bruce's side believed to be in the region of £4.5million.
"It is a fact. Hugo is joining Wigan on 15th January," Necaxa spokesman Rosendo Duhart said.
"I'm afraid I cannot say much more as the board are in Mexico City at the Mexican Football Federation headquarters because the transfer window is closing, but I was told that I can say the transfer has been set."
Rodallega scored 15 goals in 36 games for Necaxa in 2008 having previously won plaudits playing for fellow Mexican sides Monterrey and Atlas.
