Newell: Calling for calm

Ultimately you would hope that common sense would prevail and someone would make a decision which is for the best of English cricket.

Nottinghamshire director of cricket Mick Newell believes Kevin Pietersen and Peter Moores should be given more time to work out their differences.

The relationship between Pietersen and Moores is believed to be at breaking point, with crisis talks scheduled to take place when the England skipper returns from holiday later in the week.

Pietersen had three fractious years as a player at Nottinghamsire and played under Newell at Trent Bridge before departing to Hampshire in 2004.

Back then Newell stated the England skipper's departure from the East Midland county was "for everyone's benefit" after strong suggestions that Pietersen's relationship with his coach and other players was also at breaking point.

And with former Sussex head coach Moores and 28-year-old Pietersen believed to be at loggerheads over a host of issues, Newell believes the fact that the rift has now become public makes the situation harder to control.

Difficult

"It has become difficult because it has become so public," Newell told Sky Sports News.

"There are always squabbles, there are always discussions going on within teams within sporting dressing rooms.

"In general most of those things manage to stay out of the public eye, this one has obviously become more public and that is probably why the handling of the whole issue has become more difficult."

Moores, who played 231 first-class matches during spells with Sussex and Worcestershire, has an uninspiring record of just three Test series victories out of seven since taking over as national head coach in May 2007.

And Newell believes the fact that Moores never played international cricket himself, could be a factor in why the relationship between he and his skipper has deteriorated.

"His (Pietersen's) relationship with the coach may be affected by the fact that his coach didn't play international cricket," Newell said.

Sympathy

"Therefore Kevin doesn't have that instant respect for the coach that he would have for a player of greater standing.

"He (Moores) was definitely the right man for the job when he was appointed and I do have a lot of sympathy for him because he has to develop his coaching style and his methods of working with different captains.

"Kevin has only been captain for about four or five months but in cricketing terms three Test matches.

"I think that is a relationship which you would hope would be given time to develop but that may not be the case. So he (Moores) would have a lot of sympathy from county coaches from around the country.

"It will be interesting to see how it pans out. Ultimately you would hope that common sense would prevail and someone would make a decision which is for the best of English cricket."
