Todd Carney's move to Huddersfield has been called off after the former Canberra Raiders half-back was refused a visa.

The Australian signed for the Giants last summer after being sacked by the Raiders for a string of controversial alcohol-related incidents.

The Super League club has recently been informed that the 22-year-old was not granted permission to travel to the UK.

Huddersfield beat Wigan to the signature of the talented former schoolboy international and the news will come as a great blow to their ambitions for the new season.

Disappointment

"It is clearly a disappointment for Todd as he was looking forward to playing in Super League," said Giants managing director Richard Thewlis.

"His circumstances are well documented and we felt that, on balance, he would be unlikely not to be granted a visa.

"However, despite our best efforts his application has been rejected. We must now abide by the ruling and move forward accordingly."

Huddersfield captain Chris Thorman was released to Hull FC following the signing of Carney, with the Aussie expected to form a half-back partnership with Luke Robinson.

Carney's future is now in doubt. His manager, David Riolo, will try to overturn his NRL suspension that currently lasts until 2010.
