Benitez: Fergie criticism
I want to be clear. I don't want to play mind games too early and I think that United want to start.
Rafa Benitez
Quotes of the week
Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has launched an astonishing attack on Sir Alex Ferguson and has accused the Manchester United manager of attempting to start 'early' mind games in the Premier League title race.
Benitez takes his table-topping side to Stoke on Saturday looking to reinforce their position at the summit, but he has been angered by comments from Ferguson.
The Reds could move 10 points clear of third-placed United, who would enjoy the luxury of three games in hand, with victory at the Britannia Stadium but Ferguson has suggested that the Liverpool could choke under the pressure.
Ferguson's observation has caused an outburst from Benitez and the Spaniard has launched criticism of the Old Trafford boss, claiming he is the only manager to avoid punishment in the current Respect campaign.
Benitez said: "We had a meeting in Manchester with managers and the Football Association about the respect campaign.
"And I was very clear, forget the campaign because Mr Ferguson was killing the referees, killing Mr (Martin) Atkinson, killing Mr (Keith) Hackett.
"But I have seen some facts. On 1st November, they played Hull and Mr Ferguson had a two-match touchline ban and a £10,000 fine after confronting Mike Dean, the referee, for improper conduct.
"We started the Respect campaign, and that was when (Javier) Mascherano was sent off (last season) at Old Trafford.
"The referee (Steve Bennett) was the referee when they played against Wigan - he could not see the handball against Wigan by Rio Ferdinand, he did not give a penalty. They won the game and they won the title in this game.
"I think it will be the same referee who will be in charge of their game in hand this season (against Wigan).
"During the Respect campaign - and this is a fact - Mr Ferguson was charged by the FA for improper conduct after comments made about Martin Atkinson and Keith Hackett.
"He was not punished. He is the only manager in the league that cannot be punished for these things."
Benitez also feels that Ferguson's suggestion that Liverpool cannot handle the pressure at the top of the table is only an example of the Scot's infamous psychological tricks.
"I was surprised but I have to talk about facts," added Benitez. "I think that is important. I think they (United) are nervous because we are at the top of the table.
"I want to be clear. I don't want to play mind games too early and I think that they want to start."
And Benitez has also been angered by Ferguson's complaints about the English fixture list.
"Then he was talking about the fixtures," continued the former Valencia chief. "Two years ago we were playing a lot of early kick-offs away on Saturdays when United were playing on Sundays. And we didn't say anything.
"Now he is complaining about everything, that everybody is against United. But the second half of the season will see them playing at home against all the teams at the top of the table, it is a fantastic advantage.
"But at Christmas, United played on the 29th and the rest of the teams played on the 28th. We were away against Newcastle two days after playing Bolton. They were playing about 40 hours later, they were not complaining then.
"If he wants to talk about fixtures, and have a level playing field as you say in England. There are two options if we don't want more problems with fixtures.
"One is the same as in Spain, the draw for the first part of the league is known, everyone knows which weekend. In the second half everyone plays the opposite, so you all know.
"Sky have the right to choose their games and it will be the same for everyone. So Mr Ferguson will not be complaining about fixtures and a campaign against United.
"Or there is another option. That Mr Ferguson organises the fixtures in his office and sends it to us and everyone will know and cannot complain. That is simple."

I am a Liverpool fan , but i think Rafa is going over the top and getting involved in mind games , yes we all know it goes on - so what ? does he think his ranting will affect anything ? - i think it would be in the teams best interest to review how we have thrown 2 points against Stoke (twice) and previous home games agaisnt Wigan , Fulham West Ham and Hull , teams we should be beating even with Torres out injured.

Oh boohoo! Another feeble attempt at mind games... If you can't handle the heat, Rafa, just go away! It's not our fault that your team can't perform when called up, and it's not our fault that we're European champs, English champs, and World champs. It's not our fault that we're the better team and that you can't cope with being in the big league!

Amusing that UTD fans try the " Liverpool couldnt beat Stoke city" gag, while their own team lost to Derby County! The Premiership has been dull this season so far and it needed something to kick it into life. Can't wait until March when we go to UTD. They'll be so wound up Rooney won't see 20 mins - and he'll be off. Great work by Rafa. If Fergie bits then we'll all know Rafa has got to him

The current Liverpool manager has lost the plot, yes Fergie gives stick but so do all the other managers. Its a clear case of jealousy the fact is he knows his team is not good enough to win the premiership and he will be looking for a new job soon......maybe the riches club in the world will want him they are daft enough to employ a Spanish waiter..lol

Lets get back to the FACTS regarding performance. Statistics show that Liverpool performed much better in the second half of last season, a period in which they made ground on Man U. In fact over 2008 their performance in the Premier League has been second to none. With key players now back from injury it's like having new signings. I expect Liverpool will do very well over the next 17 games. With a certain Fernando Torres fresh and in form I am also looking forward to Old Trafford. Don't be fooled, Liverpool are no Chelsea. Let's hope Howard Webb get that one. For the good of football (which is more important that Liverpool or Man U) let¿s hope the referee this time is seen to be fair and impartial.

Fergie is no different than all the top managers. They all moan, pressure referees and comment on other teams.(including Benites) The problem is that United are far more successful than the other teams and so are there to be shot at by the others due to jealousy. This happened with Liverpool themselves in th 80's. I cannot believe Benites' naivety with his comments last week which were very personal and directed at Ferguson himself. Ferguson is entitled to give a view about how the Liverpool team will fair this season. However Benites views against Fergie show unprofessionalism, nerves, weakness and narrow mindedness. He should be punished.

I can't believe i'm going to say this... Looking over what Benitez has said about not playing mind games, this is not the case. Benitez has seen his Liverpool side top a table where absolutley no team has been enough to warrant being the leader of the table. After seeing his side draw to Stoke and United's heavily impressive battering of Chelsea, he must eat his words at the end of the season. The reason why penalties aren't given against United is because, surprise surprise, they have decent defenders!!! Now he's trying to stir up trouble inside the United camp by claiming Gill is in cahoots with the FA to be lenient towards his team. If we were looking at it that way half the teams in the league would have decisions going their way not just one. Fergie is right to state this a absolutley false and idiotic. Who are the champions of the world? United. Liverpool aren't much of a team without Torres. United to top table and hopefully City top half! We'll be snapping at your heels soon Fergie!

Oh Rafa, if only you had known what a bad weekend it was going to be for Liverpool, would you have stated all those "facts". Fergie as got under your skin my spanish friend. "I'd love it" my soon be replaced by "FACT". Thanks for the laugher you have caused in Manchester.

I would suggest that Rafa should worry more about trying to rebound from the embarrasment of drawing with Stoke. It is not difficult to take any critisism and ignore it. After a draw with Stoke and Man U crushing Chelsea, he has achieved nothing and put added pressure on his players. Ferguson is right, Liverpool have not challenged for the title in recent years so they will find it more difficult down the stretch. They should shut up and get on with it!!

Rafa knows he's risen to the bait, but this has been something that EVERYONE has been aware of (bar the besoted united fans-though im sure when mourinho performed similar tricks, you were the first to notice..), and I'm pleased that he said it. I noticed that there werent any tantrams today from fergie - although maybe that was because things were going his way? The point Rafa made was an extremely valid one, and anyone who watches united regualarly will know that. Of course, Fergie could just try to win the league by being the best team, fair and square; no mind games, no bullying the refs or moaning about the fixtures (because united are OBVIOUSLY at a disadvntage with most of their games at home in the 2nd half of the season - including, no less, than the games against the other "top 4" teams). He could just get on with his job in a proffessional mannor, but hes a manipulitive coward.

Well done Rafa! Although i've got to take my hat off to Sir Alex for taking his defeat to us so graciously on Wednesday night, it's the first time i've seen him admit his side deserved to lose. It was clear as soon as United went 1-0 down the Referee was under constant pressure to try and restore what would be seen as "normal" by handing all decisions Uniteds way. Must also agree with what someone said in an earlier comment. Why are the semi's two legged? Seems like no other reason than to prevent potential upsets, which is what would have been reality had this stupid rule not been put in place.

I hope Fergie puts Rafa in his place once and for all. Liverpool haven't won the title for ages and now all of a sudden Rafa talks and acts like they've been winning it season after season. Since Rafa likes talking in facts, here's one for you: United still have two games in hand and if they win them, they'll be top of the table. Not to mention, all of the big 3 games have been away from home. United fans aren't scared; they're laughing. Rafa's trying to be brave and make a statement and its horribly backfired. Man utd win 3-0 against Chelsea the same weekend Liverpool are held to a draw against Stoke. Thanks for playing Rafa, maybe next time.

As a Utd fan, I think Rafa's rant is unwarranted. What preferential treatment is he talking about? There is none. I think Fergie should try not to reply to such stupid comments and let the players do the talking. Rafa, please stop whining and moaning and complaining all the time, it aint gonna work. To borrow an Eric Clapton song, "Before You Accuse Me, Take A Look At Yourself". Oh, does he complain when decisions go his way? No. Do decisions go his way? Ofcourse, more times than people think. I think its only mind games, which Fergie is an expert at. Rafa, c u at Old Trafford in March where you will get a "warm" reception.

I was very impressed by Rafa who had the guts to stand up to Ferguson, (such a successful manager, with a great team) and i fully support what he said, there are facts in his speakings and it is great that some is finally voicing the concerns that i have had with Man U's bullying tactics and luck. GO RAFA!

Both Rafa and Graham Poll have confirmed what we've always known. That Fergie and UTD are "more equal" than the others. Here's a few facts Rafa forgot to mention. The continued leniency shown to Rooney despite his consistent abusive, petulant and sometimes violent behaviour on the field. Evra being banned THIS year instead of last year when it mattered and was relevant. Fergies underhand dealings at signing Berbatov which went against Premier league rules. The lack of yellow cards issued for UTD players arguing with the referee. The lack of penalties awarded against UTD and the number"unseen"by the referees. But the ultimate has to be Fergie walking onto the pitch berating the referee at the start of the second half of last years champions league final. Only Fergie could get away with such a thing!!

Benitez has performed a trick magicians have done for years. Like Joe Kinnear rant when he started at Newcastle which was deliberate to take pressure off his players. Benitez has moved all attention from Steven Gerrard arrest the previous week on to a battle with him and Fergie. Nobody has mentioned Steven Gerrard outside of a football context this week. Benitez is a smart man and this was planned to get people talking about a conflict and to allow Liverpools star players arrest to blow over.

Let's get something straight Rafa is just commenting on the fact that Ferguson has got away with publicly slandering referees and accusing the Premier League of bias against his team, he is not commenting on his complaints just that he seems to be able to say what he wants without reproach unlike any other manager

I think Rafa should concentrate on his own team rather than hitting out at others. Liverpool couldn't beat Stoke even once in the league and they are already getting too big for their boots by claiming they are at the top. Its only a matter of time Rafa. And as for Sir Alex, agreed he does get a bit carried away at times, but the man's been managing for more than 20 years compared to Rafa's 5! And he's been associated with football for round-about 50 years! Oh i'm just WAITING for United Vs Liverpool in March!!

Was it just me or did "Rafa's Rant" have absolutely nothing to do with the question he was asked??? And I think Rafa needs to spend more time trying to work out how to beat Stoke than spending his time digging up "facts about Mr.Ferguson"
