Rooney: Important win
Wayne Rooney is eager to see Manchester United hit the top of the table following the 3-0 win over title rivals Chelsea.
United closed the gap on current leaders Liverpool to five points after Sunday's convincing victory over a lacklustre Chelsea side.
And the champions could move into first place before Liverpool play again, with United facing Wigan and Bolton before next Monday's Merseyside derby.
Rooney was happy to see United take advantage of Liverpool's 0-0 draw with Stoke on Saturday and now wants his team to increase the pressure.
"That might only last until Liverpool play Everton on the Monday, but on Saturday night we want to look at the table and see ourselves at the top," Rooney told MUTV.
"Today's win against Chelsea was very important. After watching Liverpool, we needed to take advantage and get the win.
"We've done that now so come Saturday, if we do our job right and win our two games, then we'll be top."
Rooney felt Nemanja Vidic's goal in first-half injury-time was a key moment in the game just moments after Cristiano Ronaldo's header had been disallowed.
He added: "The first goal meant that walking in at half-time we could see the Chelsea lads and their heads seemed to go down a bit.
"We knew if we could go at them in the second half, they wouldn't live with us."
Ronaldo's goal was chalked off following a clever corner routine which saw Rooney roll the ball out of the 'D' for Ryan Giggs to collect and play in a cross.
Rooney vehemently protested the linesman's decision to flag for an offence and the England striker was unhappy that the goal was ruled out.
"The linesman got it wrong," he said. "We've worked on that in training and I don't see what the problem was.
"I took the ball into the 'D' and rolled it out for Giggs to cross it."
