Quotes of the week
Luiz Felipe Scolari has no plans to add to his squad during the January transfer window despite their 3-0 setback at Manchester United.
Scolari admitted after the Old Trafford humbling that Chelsea cannot afford to play in such a manner again if they are to claim any silverware this season.
The Blues were second best for long periods against the Premier League and European champions, who will be top of the table by 5pm on Saturday if they win their forthcoming fixtures against Wigan and Bolton.
But despite their dismal display, Scolari will not be dipping into the transfer market to bolster his options for the remainder of the campaign.
"We don't need more players," he said. "I don't think they will arrive and I don't want them anyway. This is my squad and I will improve them."
The Brazilian, who has been forced to deny reports of dressing room unrest, accepts that Chelsea looked anything but title contenders.
"We are not playing well enough to win any tournament at present," he said.
"The title has not been won or lost. We have another 17 matches to play yet, so who knows what will happen.
"But if we play three or four more matches like this one we will not win anything.
"Now we must think about the future. We need to be men and improve, not feel as though we have lost everything. I am not that type of person and I don't think my players are either."
Next on the agenda for the World Cup-winning coach is a testing FA Cup replay against League One side Southend on Wednesday evening.
After exiting the Carling Cup at home to Burnley, Scolari cannot afford another embarrassing defeat to lower division opposition if he is to prevent his position from coming under increasing scrutiny.
