Portsmouth defender Sol Campbell insists that while he has a love-hate relationship with the game at times, he is not prepared to leave it just yet.

Campbell wants to play for at least another three years when his contract runs out in the summer and he has not dismissed the lure of management when he finally decides to hang up his boots.

The former Tottenham and Arsenal star loves the challenge of performing at the very highest level and believes he has proved his doubters wrong about his appetite for the game and desire for success.

At 34 years old, Campbell's career has seen a mixture of trophies and controversies.

He is a three-time FA Cup winner and a UEFA Champions League final goalscorer and he has led England as captain on three occasions during his 73-game international career.

But he attracted the fury of Spurs fans with a high-profile move to North London rivals Arsenal, disappeared to Brussels after on and off-the-pitch difficulties at Highbury and endured a string of racist and homophobic abuse.

Campbell told The Times: "Football is inside me. If you live and breathe it and you love the challenge and want to see where you can go, you can't do nothing about it.

"I want to play for another three more years. I would definitely look at it after that, probably give myself a break, go away and start a family, but I think eventually I would like to come back and see what I can do.

"It's a shame people don't want to see the real you, that you're proper, that you've got no hidden agendas."
