Hampshire beat Lancashire by 64 runs

Hampshire reached the final of the FP Trophy with a 64-run victory over Lancashire at Old Trafford.

The visitors successfully defended a total of 271, leg-spinner Imran Tahir collecting 3-38 as Lancashire crashed to 207 all out in reply.

Home captain Glen Chapple won the toss and asked Hampshire to bat first, a decision he may have been regretting as Michael Lumb and Jimmy Adams put on 159 in 25 overs.

But then 10 wickets tumbled for the addition of only 112 further runs with Chapple, Gary Keedy and Sajid Mahmood claiming three wickets apiece.

The opening stand had contained 12 fours and three sixes but there only four boundaries in the remainder of the Hampshire innings.

Adams was first to his half-century off 47 balls with five fours and a six. But Lumb actually reached his 50 in two fewer deliveries and also struck five fours and a six.

Mahmood strikes

Mahmood shipped 28 runs in his first three overs but returned to the attack to make a double breakthrough and start Hampshire's decline.

Adams was the first to fall after making 78 off 71 balls with six fours and two sixes, cutting to point where Francois Du Plessis took a one-handed catch.

And nine runs later Lumb's innings of 76 from 79 deliveries came to an end when he lofted to Chapple at mid-on.

Left-arm spinner Keedy then ensured Hampshire were unable to fully capitalise on their flying start by claiming three quick wickets.

He trapped Michael Carberry (12) leg-before, bowled Sean Ervine (12) after he had swung across the line and then claimed a second lbw success when Liam Dawson (6) played back to finish with 3-49.

Mahmood (3-56) and Chapple (3-46) worked their way through the lower order as Hampshire were bowled out in 48.4 overs.

Lancashire's run chase started badly as Hampshire skipper Dimitri Mascarenhas struck with his first ball, opener Paul Horton (5) edging to Lumb at slip.

Mal Loye looked in decent touch and pulled successive deliveries from Mascarenhas to the midwicket boundary.

But, after adding 73 in 14 overs with VVS Laxman, he missed an attempted sweep at Tahir and fell lbw for 31.

The score became 108-3 when Mark Chilton (18) failed to make proper contact trying to pull Sean Ervine and looped a catch to Carberry in the deep.

Then came a double contribution from Adams in the field to effectively end the contest.

Du Plessis (5) perished to a one-handed catch at backward point off Ervine and then Adams held on to a powerful drive by Laxman (54) at short extra cover from the bowling of Dawson.

Tahir (3-38) finished off the tail, including Steven Croft for 33 off 40 balls, to close out the result.

Hampshire will play Sussex in the final at Lord's on July 25.
