Scharner: Wants midfield role
Austria international Paul Scharner has warned he will leave Wigan Athletic if he is forced to play at the back under Roberto Martinez.
Scharner plays in midfield for his country and the 29-year-old has now decided that is where he wants to play at club level.
However, new manager Martinez is keen for Scharner to remain at the heart of his defence, a decision he has objected to.
The former SK Brann man has hinted he is ready to move on, but accepts he may be forced to stay until January.
"The manager told me he needs me to play at the back, to bring the ball out and to interpret his tactical concept," he said in the Sunday Mirror.
"But I have decided to play in midfield, because that's where I play for Austria, and I told him as much.
"Wigan's clear aim for the season is survival. It looks like being a hard battle.
"The transfer window is still open until the end of August, so let's just see what happens.
"If there's nothing, I will be at Wigan at least until the winter."
