Peterborough United director of football Barry Fry has confirmed Darren Ferguson's departure as manager.

Reports first emerged on Monday that Ferguson's tenure with The Posh had come to an end - three years after he took charge.

Ferguson guided Peterborough to successive promotions from League One and Two, and was rewarded with a new four-year deal in the summer.

But they have struggled in the Championship this term and are currently bottom of the table.

Fry, who met with Ferguson along with chief executive office Bob Symms on Monday, has now confirmed the departure.

"Nothing surprises me in football," he told the Peterborough Evening Telegraph.

"I and the club would like to thank him for his miraculous achievements with the total support of the chairman in the near three years he has been at the club and we wish him and his family all the best in the future."

The likes of Peter Taylor, Steve Coppell and Oxford boss Chris Wilder are all being linked with the now vacant post.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news - nut no where does it say he was sacked... The board met, and he left.....He could quite as easily felt he'd achieved all he could at the club and walked away.. after all read Barry Fry'd quote, does that sound like a man who expectd his manager to leave...

Truly amazing, probably his first sticky patch in management and he is down the road. Think a big mistake has been made and clubs will be queueing up to hire a young ambitious british manager. Peterborough will find it hard to stay up and could end up on a downward spiral!

John Joiner (Aberdeen fan) says...

Again no apparent financial support given to manager who has done so well to bring Peterborough to the Championship where bigger and better teams have struggled.I would assume that Darren would have left the club letting his opinions be known. No two doubts he will end up at a bigger club than Posh...to be fair that wouldn't be too difficult.

Syed Hassan (Manchester United fan) says...

Shameful! Barry Fry should know better. There is no way Posh are going to survive in the championship this season, no matter who is in charge. Wouldn't it have been better to keep someone who knows the club and had success with it than to bring in someone and go down with them.......total lunacy! Clubs and directors complain about players loyalty.......what have they shown here by sacking a manager who's given them incomparable success!!!! Shame on you Peterborough directors.....especially Mr Fry....you should know better!!!!!

Billy Sexton (Millwall fan) says...

Absolutely disgraceful decision. Ferguson helped Posh punch above their weight last season and was then given no support at all to mount a challenge to stay in the championship. I'd like to hope that Ferguson will go on to better things (and better clubs) whilst Posh find themselves back in League Two where Ferguson found them. Barry Fry - useless manager, hopeless chairman. Posh fans you have my sympathy.

Martin Drage (Manchester United fan) says...

Great to see all these messages of support for darren and no idiots comparing him to his father!!.....Decision was shocking really.....2 promotions on a Shoestring with Non League players was Amazing!! soon as things got tough they got rid of him.....joke!!

Tracy Douglas (Arsenal fan) says...

What a joke, I have no doubt that they would have survived this season, and then go on an build on it next season. I t just goes to show that the men in suits upstairs have no clue about football, it's just about the money. I hope that all the loyal Posh fans boycott the next home game, let's see how far they get with no money and no support....Disgraceful Mr Fry....

Ash Turner (Middlesbrough fan) says...

a victim of his own success? ive really tried to understand why the decision was made, both from a football and business point of view but i cant find the answer. was he disliked from the posh fans? id expect not. As a Boro fan im realising it is a very tough league, but its also a very long season. it reminds me of the media attention surrounding phil brown at the moment. i know we have just parted company with captain marvel gareth but maybe some clubs should show the belief and support to the manager as steve gibson has done time after time. the grass aint always greener. up the boro

Paul Willerton (Grimsby Town fan) says...

The only positive to come from Fergie's sacking, is that we (Grimsby) need a manager!! Could Fergie be the new Lawrie Mac? Barry Fry is an idiot - always has been. If Fergie got Grimsby promoted twice it wouldn't matter what we did in the Championship. Darren - come up the A16, we're waiting...!

James Betts (Tottenham Hotspur fan) says...

This decision has baffled me beyond belief, how a manger with such achievement is sacked in the first 3 months of the season is beyond me! Ferguson took this club to where it is now and without him i cant really see them going anywhere. I love Peterborough as a club but Fry really needs to look at the decision he's made and question himself on whether it really is the correct decision for the club! This is Peterborough's first season in the championship, what did Fry expect? I'm sure all the Posh fans out there agree that just being in the Championship is good enough! Cheers Fergie, all the best!

Nadine Jackson (Arsenal fan) says...

Another ridiculous decision from the one and only Barry Fry. Fry has never been anything but trouble for United, i'm hoping that one day he will learn to step aside from the club and learn that success should be put before publicity. I hope that Darren Ferguson goes on to great things as everyone has seen he is more than capable of doing so. Fed up of all these big money men coming into football thinking they know as much about the game as they do there money. Stick to what your good at Machanthony.

Jamie Keys (Tottenham Hotspur fan) says...

I am speechless! This is the biggest disgrace in football I ave seen in a long time. Not only have Peterborough sacked a manager who have given them more success than they dared to believe but they have also sacked a manager with so much MORE potential and a fantastic future ahead of him. He could be as big as his Dad in years to come! The man has given them back to back promotions but because the board are to tight to put their hands in their pocket and spend on transfers which are vitaly needed if you think you are going to make a solid bid to enter the premier league (The best league in the world), how mind numbingly naive can you get. Good luck to Darren Ferguson who has a lot better opportunities coming to him in the not to distant future. Peterborough...enjoy back to back relegations!

Jonathan Torpey (Chelsea fan) says...

Well done Fry you just put your club back in League One where you will probably remain. Young home grown managerial talent will always succeed somewhere, it doesn't grow on trees. Fergie Jnr will go on to bigger and better things and ultimately have the last laugh. Too bad for Posh fans.

Absolute joke! Back to back promotions and sacked before Christmas!!!! One of the worst decisions i have ever seen!!!!!

Daniel Lang (Plymouth Argyle fan) says...

"If a chairman sacks the manager he initially appointed, he should go as well." (Brian Clough) Horrendous decision, the board should be ashamed. i hope Fergie mk2 ends up at a successful Championship club and takes them to the Premiership. Ipswich anyone?

Lucas Casey (Aston Villa fan) says...

What Fergie Jr. has done for Peterborough is Football Manager stuff. One can only dream of back to back promotions in real life and the Chairman ought to be ashamed of himself. Everyone knows what sort of manager he is and I wish him the best of success at his next club where they might even appreciate him.

P Sayer (Gillingham fan) says...

So pleased people from all clubs have united to one voice on this matter. What a joke. After what he did for them! So what if they go down, he could get them promoted again and come back stronger and more experienced.

Gavin Harris (Everton fan) says...

I think this sport has a serious problem...how can a club sack a manager who has gained promotion 2 seasons on the trot and has the complete backing of the fans? Not to mention the experience he can call on in times of trouble. Who are his contacts? Ferguson, Moyes, Hughes and Bruce for crying out loud!!! Lets hope the posh fans turn on the club directors.
