Wasps are prepared to offer disgraced England prop Matt Stevens a contract once he has served his two-year drugs ban.

Stevens is currently suspended until 18 January 2011 after he admitted taking cocaine - leaving his career in tatters.

The Durban-born front row tested positive for the recreational drug following a Heineken Cup clash with Glasgow in December 2008, with Stevens admitting he had an addiction.

Stevens opted to quit Bath in the wake of the scandal - although he made it clear at the time that he hoped to return to the sport once he had served his suspension.

And Wasps director and England skipper Lawrence Dallaglio has confirmed that the Adams Park club would be willing to take a chance on Stevens.

"We will be happy to offer Matt a job when he completes his ban and Wasps have a reputation for taking in waifs and strays," Dallaglio told the London Evening Standard.

"We are an inclusive club and the game has a moral obligation to look after Matt, who was banned for using a recreational drug not a performance-enhancing one.

"Matt was hung out to dry when this all broke and Bath should have looked after him."

Bill Porter says...

He should be given a second chance, everyone deserves one - he didn't take performance enhancing drugs, he admitted his problem and it was hardly a daming revelation - he didn't deserve a 2 year ban, 12 months would have been suffiicent. A great player, lets hope he can come back just as strong.

Morgan Jenkins says...

As long as he plays well works hard for the team and is clean from drugs I dont care about his past

Danny Wi says...

This is quite typical - the club knows that they should not touch him with a barge pole because a) he is a bad example and b) he was born in South Africa but they think that they may get him on the cheap because no one else will want him. Mark my words - he will let Wasps down again and be an embarrassment to club and country - like all 'justice' in this country - it can be swept under the carpet if needs must.

Matt Potter says...

He was stupid for what he did but as a wasps fan i would welcome him with open arms. One of the best props in the world!! With Vickery coming to the end of his career with persistant neck injuries this would give us more options up front

I totaly agree with Lawrence he used it for recreation! I am not saying he did not do wrong but he did not take the drug to cheat and I am glad that he is going to be looked after as lets face it we would all want a Dallaglio in our corner! Good luck Matt you stood up admitted your problem and served your time!

Lee Norwood says...

As a wasp fan I believe it will be a risk but Matt Stevens is a fantastic prop and deserves a second chance. Bath shouldn¿t have hung him out to dry like they did but because they did they will have lost an amazing player when he returns in 2011.
