Northern Ireland coach Nigel Worthington is waiting to hold talks over a new contract after reiterating his wish to stay in the role.

Worthington has impressed during his two years in the position and led Northern Ireland to a creditable fourth spot in their 2010 World Cup qualifying group.

The national side were in contention for at least a play-off place until failure to win their final three matches shattered their World Cup dreams.

The team's progress in recent times has pleased Worthington and he is eager to build on the foundations he has laid.

His current deal expires at the end of the year and he is hoping upcoming talks with Irish Football Association president Raymond Kennedy and chief executive Patrick Nelsen will prove positive.

"When the president is available we will sit down and have a chat," said Worthington. "Hopefully that might be over the course of the next fortnight or whenever.

"I have enjoyed it. If everything is right, yes I would like to stay on.

"I feel we have come on in leaps and bounds. People can see we are trying to play good football and that is important to me."
