Jayawardene: Sixth Test match double hundred
First Test Match
Ahmedabad
India 426 (R Dravid 177, M S Dhoni 110, Yuvraj Singh 68, U W M B C A Welegedara 4-87) v Sri Lanka 591-5 (D P M D Jayawardene 204 no, T M Dilshan 112, H A P W Jayawardene 84 no, T T Samaraweera 70)
Mahela Jayawardene struck his sixth Test match double century on day three as Sri Lanka took complete control of the first Test against India in Ahmedabad.
The former captain's magnificent unbeaten 204 saw the tourists take a giant step towards securing their first ever Test win in India, Sri Lanka reaching stumps on 591-5 - a first-innings lead of 165.
Jayawardene shared an unbroken 216-run partnership with namesake Prasanna (84no) as the India bowlers toiled for the reward of only two further wickets.
Resuming the third day on 275-3, Thilan Samaraweera (70) completed his 20th Test half-century before he was brilliantly caught at square leg by Yuvraj Singh off the bowling of Ishant Sharma.
And the home side threatened to take the upper hand when a questionable bat-pad decision from umpire Daryl Harper saw Harbhajan Singh fortunately dismiss Angelo Mathews for 17.
Undeterred, Prasanna and Mahela continued to build on the promising start and took the attack back to India after lunch.
The pair added 68 in the first hour of the second session and Mahela duly reached his 27th Test century when he guided Amit Mishra (0-152) through backward point.
Prassana effortlessly brought up his third Test 50 shortly after, and, with his leading bowlers proving ineffective, India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni was even forced to call on the rarely used spin of part-timer Sachin Tendulkar.
An uttterly dominant day for Sri Lanka was capped off with just over two overs of the day remaining, Mahela pinching a single off Zaheer Khan to reach his sixth Test double century.
