The Manny Pacquiao camp have raised the stakes with Floyd Mayweather Jr by insisting he is scared the Filipino would ruin his unbeaten record if the two meet in a pound-for-pound battle the boxing world is crying out for.

Pacquiao increased his claims to be the best pound-for-pound fighter on the planet with his 12-round demolition of Miguel Cotto landing him the WBO welterweight title in Las Vegas.

Mayweather returned to the ring with an impressive win over Juan Manuel Marquez in September and now the fight everyone wants to see is a battle between him and Pacquiao.

The 32-year-old American was undoubtedly the pound-for-pound king before his retirement but Pacquiao's continued success as he rises up the weights now has him firmly in the argument with opinion now split on who is the better fighter.

Mayweather insisted he was the better man in an exclusive interview with Sky Sports, and he said Pacquiao was afraid to face him.

Unbeaten

However, the Filipino's trainer Freddie Roach believes his man will win any meeting between the two, whilst promoter Bob Arum says Mayweather is scared of losing his 40-fight unbeaten record.

"You have to understand Mayweather's psyche. Psychologically he may not be prepared to do this fight," said Arum.

"Now this is me being an amateur psychologist, but Mayweather is so tied up with the fact that nobody has beaten him, that he has a zero on his record, I don't know if he would be willing to go into the ring with anybody that could jeopardise that zero.

"He is afraid, terrified of losing that zero.

"That's why he's ducked (Shane) Mosley, (Antonio) Margarito and Cotto, and the question is will he duck Manny Pacquiao because he's so afraid of losing that zero."

Arum's goading is aimed at getting Mayweather into the ring, and American TV executives believe a super fight at welterweight next May is on the cards.

Hero's welcome

Pacquiao himself enjoyed his now customary hero's welcome as he arrived back at Manila airport, and he told Mayweather that he should be the one challenging for a fight.

"We are not pushing the fight. He should be the first to challenge me, after all I got a higher pay-per-view from my fight," Pacquiao told the waiting media.

Regardless of who challenges who, the fight must surely go ahead with the expected huge revenue if nothing else forcing the two men to get into the ring together.

"It's not so much that I give a damn whether this fight happens - I don't - and for me it's not the greatest experience doing a promotion with Floyd Mayweather," Arum added.

"But boxing is on such a roll now, not to do this fight would slow down considerably the momentum that boxing has, and that would be wrong."

styles make fights. If u have a fighter who can duck and dodge like Mayweather against an offensive one dimentional fighter like Pacquiao who loves to come forward, then mayweather is gonna kill him. He'll counter punch manny to death and will take his sweet time about it too. Manny is good but he has been beat 3 times and Marquez out boxed him in both fights where Mayweather destroyed marquez in september. Mayweather doesn't need this fight. Pac man does because no one in the sport generates more money per fight than Mayweather. Pac man wants the payday and i dont blame him, but Pac man canot win.

i have said it before and i will say it again pacman is amazing but mayweather is the best fighter around at the moment the only person who could be better is his son if he gets into boxing i would even say pacman may retire after fighting mayweather because he will make him look like an ordanary fighter like he did against marquez.Thats how good mayweather is. And bob and freddie deep down know it.

Suspect chin? Hatton has a suspect chin, not Manny. Manny took Cottos best punchers & never went down.. Floyd vs Manny would be a boring fight.Manny would duck & conter while Manny looks for a way in. Nobody has ever found a way in, but Manny would be the best bet to do so

Mayweather is to technical for Pacman. Because Manny is so aggressive it would make it easier for Floyd to tag him and knock him out. Mayweather will simply counter him all night and give Pacman the beating of his life. Sorry Pacman Mayweather is in a class of his own. For all you boxing fans did you not hear Mayweather already call Pacman out or was I the only one that saw the clip after the fight.

IF mayweather isnt running scared of pacquiao now, he sure as hell will be (like usual) if they meet in the ring. There is no question of mwayweathers skills as a boxer, but i dont find his fights anywhere near as exciting as pacquiaos. He will run from manny and i am not sure how much heart he will have one manny wears him down like he has done to so many top class fighters. Floyd is a great counter puncher, but he has always been the fastest guy in that ring, how can you counter punch punches that you dont see?

Bob Arum...what a joke? Mayweather all day everyday!! Pacman is a awesome boxer but Floyd will ruin him, Lets just hope this fight happens because it will shut a lot of people up! These fights he has apparently ducked out are of no importance to mayweather, we will see when Pacman get put out by the KING of boxing!

Pacquaio is a great fighter, no doubt. But Floyd loves fighting offensive boxers and thats what manny is. manny will press on to floyd who will duck and dive his way out of getting hit, eventually until he gets a good opportunity to expose mannys questionable defence and will knock him out

What u all fail to notice is that mayweather is "Truly, Truly Blessed" where as manny is "jus doing my jab(Job)." Just doing your job is not enough to beat someone who is "Truly, Truly Blessed" this mean mayweather will win

I think the fight is going to happen this is just hype to get the most revenue out of it when it happens. No boxer should ever be that scared he won't take a fight on at there level or else they might aswell hang up their gloves. Most fighters are worried about who the bigger fighter is and how much they are getting paid instead of winning titles and being the best they can be. This will be one of the biggest fights ever in the sport with contrast in styles and two of the best boxers ever.

This fight has got to happen. I do not believe for one second Flotd is running scared, to the contrary he has already called pacman out. As for a winner it is too close to call but if somebody put a gun to my head and told me to pick i would have top say Mayweather on points (would like to see manny win though)

Although i think Manny Pac is an unbelievable fighter and i enoy his persona and fighting skills, i just cant see Mayweather getting beat. He defensive skills are too good to break down, we all seen this against Marquez, Hatton, De la Hoya. Manny Pac has got speed and in Boxing everybody knows speed kills but i think Mayweather has got the technical ability to take this. Obviously it wont be an easy fight but i am backing Money Mayweather!

No way Pac can beat Floyd, He has no defence, only offence! Cotto could have beaten him if he had boxed him instead of trying to out macho him. Pac is the one whose scared to fight, Marquez beat him, Floyd beat Marquez in a dominant, masterclass performance. Pac is exciting to watch for sure and he will offer problems to Floyd with his speed and power but you cant hurt what you cant hit! Floyd in 10 round stoppage!

PACMAN walk through Cotto shots, I highly doubt Mayweather can do the same. Mayweather is scared and that is why he is asking for a bigger piece of the pie, he knows Arum will not give it to him. So Mayweather pulls a Mosley after crying about no respect, Pacman just finished a fight. Mayweather is not fight a slow Marquez in this one. Believe me, he will get caught with a haymaker and go down. All his defensive skills will go down the drain when the most ferocious finisher in the sport comes at him. Remember Mayweather has been down too. Who has Mayweather fought that can be compared to Cotto, Mosley or PACMAN that can really hit?

Pacquiao is great, no doubt about it but do i think he can beat Mayweather?? No way, Mayweather never gets hit, hes too good at defence, Pacquiao gets hit alot and i think Mayweather would knock him out!!

Arum is talking rubbish and so is Roach. I have the upmost respect for Pacquaio but he hasn't got enough for Floyd. Mayweather will knock manny out and dominate him. He has better skills, a better defence and I actually think he is quicker too.

We all criticise Mayweather for not being a knockout puncher. But we all love it when Pacquiao knocks people out. The fact is, we don't expect the pacman to have a great defence, so why do we expect mayweather to have an equally great offence?

Pacquiao is not the only one who can challenge Floyd. I think S S Mosley would be be an even better fighter to face P B Mayweather.
