The soul searching taking place at Liverpool this season will intensify after the five-time kings of Europe crashed out of the UEFA Champions League group stages despite winning 1-0 at Debrecen.

Rafa Benitez's Reds travelled to Hungary with their boss admitting his side needed a miracle to reach the last 16, and the Spaniard's worst fears were confirmed as Fiorentina defeated Lyon in Florence to qualify at the expense of his team.

The three points for the Italians in Tuesday's other match in Group E rendered events in Budapest completely irrelevant as a first-half goal from French striker David Ngog will now take a back seat to plans for the Europa League.

Ngog handed Liverpool the perfect start after just four minutes, applying a glancing touch to Jamie Carragher's header across goal from a Fabio Aurelio cross, but he and his team-mates were left to rue the late draw in Lyon at the beginning of November.

Benitez will take solace in ending a winless run that stretches back to the Premier League success over Manchester United in October but he will also know that a failure to reach the knockout stages for the first time in his tenure will only increase tension in a wretched season.

The cost is little more than a couple of million pounds this season for Liverpool, who continually stress that they never budget for anything but the group stages.

But it is a severe blow to the esteem of a true European power who have suffered a fall from grace few would have predicted when the competition started.

The true damage comes next season if they fail to finish in the Premier League's top four, something they are far from certain of. That would see them lose a cool £10m immediately and put further question marks over the financial direction the club is facing.

Nerves

Liverpool had Glen Johnson and Aurelio back from injury, otherwise it was the same side that drew with Manchester City on Saturday - with Ryan Babel out with an ankle injury and Yossi Benayoun on the bench, suggesting that his hamstring injury is still not completely healed.

Debrecen made eight changes from the side that beat Honved in the Hungarian league at the weekend, and included seven of the side that lost 1-0 in the opening group match back in September at Anfield.

And Liverpool could not have asked for a better start to settle any nerves as they went ahead after just four minutes with the Hungarians having barely touched the ball.

Aurelio's cross from the right curled to the far post for Carragher to head back across goal, where Ngog guided the ball with the outside of his right foot in off the keeper and the far post.

Twice Dirk Kuyt narrowly failed to get on the end of close-range crosses as Liverpool sought a second.

But they began to get sloppy, giving the ball away with over-ambitious passes which wasted the impressive movement that had Debrecen struggling.

Debrecen also gave away a lot of early free-kicks as they struggled to contain Liverpool, and Dutch referee Bjorn Kuipers lost patience and booked Zoltan Szelesi for a foul on Steven Gerrard.

Vukasin Poleksic twice saved well from Ngog, with Liverpool having 70 per cent of the possession.

But news of a Fiorentina goal against Lyon was enough to silence the travelling support and change the mood.

Confidence

Debrecen's first opportunity soon followed with Gergely Rudolf heading wide when unmarked in the area. Liverpool needed, at least, to settle the issue with a second goal in this match as Debrecen continued to grow in confidence.

Poleksic made another fine save to turn away a close-range Gerrard effort after he was set up by Johnson.

Debrecen then sent on striker Adamo Coulibaly in place of Peter Szakaly. The big Frenchman had caused Liverpool plenty of problems earlier in the season.

Now nerves were getting to the Liverpool men as they toiled to clinch the match.

Emiliano Insua lost possession to Rudolf on the edge of the box, regaining the ball as the forward threw himself down in the box.

Agger's run set up a chance for Gerrard but he drove high over from the edge of the box.

Debrecen players were going down at every opportunity now, drawing howls of anger from the home fans.

Benayoun came on for Ngog after 77 minutes, with Debrecen replacing Marcell Fodor with Tibor Dombi a minute later.

Carragher headed an Aurelio corner just wide but the second goal remained elusive for Liverpool.

Kuyt was now the central striker with Benayoun on the right, but it was Liverpool on the defensive as Rudolf forced Jose Reina into a save from a fierce angled drive.

Liverpool sent on Andrea Dossena for Aurelio with a couple of minutes left, Alberto Aquilani replacing Gerrard in injury time.

There was still time for Coulibaly to have a shot kicked clear by Reina as Liverpool clung onto their lead.

Matt Henderson (Liverpool fan) says...

Like all Reds fans, I'm absolutely gutted that we're out of the Champions League. But, to think of getting rid of Rafa is ridiculous. He only signed a 5 year contract a few months ago, so that would be a poor business decision, and would put us at least another 5-6 years away from competing at the top in the most important trophy, the Premier League. The only positive thing that can come from this is that the players now have a reality check, they are not as good as they think they are. Surely now, the american muppets must give as much money to Rafa for January so that we can definitely be playing champs league football.

I think there has been a massive over reaction to Liverpool failing to qualify for the next stage of the champions league. The so called football experts that are predicting our iminent collapse into a mid table premier league team with no hope or future with a manager who has'nt got a clue are the same experts who were predicting we would win the premiership just 3 to 4 months ago. They are also the same experts that were commending Benetiz on his tactical brilliance in Europe after thrashing Real Madrid 5-0 on agg last season. We should take no notice of these so called experts as their opinion changes from one week to the next and they base their comments on what will get them the most column space or screen time!! The real expert is the man with 1 CL, 1 UEFA cup, 1 FA Cup and 2 La Liga titles! In Rafa we trust!!

What a shock!! Out of the Champions league at the first stage. Words can't describe how disappointed i am. Now it's time for Rafa to seriously look at his tactics and team selection. I know we have had a lot of injuries to key players this season, but seriously we must have a better option in Midfield than Lucas. Clearly he is nowhere near good enough for a team like Liverpool and why does Rafa insist in playing him and Mascherano together, far too negative. We spent 20 mil on Aquilani in the summer and he's still to start a competitive game. Surely he should be given a chance to show us what he can do. Fans will blame the Yanks and say they have'nt come up with the money to strengthen the squad, but having spent 20 mil on one player surely he should be playing regularly. For too long we have been too reliant on Gerrard and Torres and we desperately need a proven a striker too cover Torres. Any Liverpool fan can see we don't have another striker in the squad who can score 15-20 goals a season. Is it time for a new manager? Only time will tell? The January transfer window is key. We must strenghten and we must get quality otherwise we won't finish in the top 4. Do i trust Rafa, not so sure anymore!!

It was not a good day for liverpool fans, i really feel sorry for them. I really wanted all premiership teams to go through to the last 16. I guess liverpool were not good enough this time around. I hope this will give them a boost on premiership, the really need to work hard this time than ever.

Jason Matthews (Liverpool fan) says...

Sorry lads its the Europa for us and we deserve it. After a dismal qualifying round we could not have expected anything less. We have lost that killer instinct at the moment :O( With the derby coming this weekend lets hope it gets the fire burning again and get us back on track. This is the worst run I can remember for a long time. Get rid of zonal marking Rafa and for god sake play Aquilani, at the moment he is just a 20 million euro bench filler. Surly he is fit enough by now !!!!!!!! Come on lads heads up keep the faith and most importantly YOU WILL NEVER WALK ALONE

Jonny Doyle (Liverpool fan) says...

I am absolutly fuming after that game there are players inthe liverpool squad that should never be awarded the chance to put the red jersey on never mind play for liverpool football club. Lucas, Dossena, babel and Voronin these players just are not near good enough to play for a team like liverpool. RAFA BENITEZ i always speak highly of him in arguements with friend but now i think the question needs to be is he doing the right thing making the right decisions i dont think he is. We just paid 20 million plus for a midfield player and hasnt started a game or played a big part in any game is he still injured or something i am so frustrated with the way we are playing at the moment and if any of the players see this comment which they probably wont think about the fans because we are getting some stick it is actually becoming a joke

Emmanuel Azuike (Liverpool fan) says...

I really think that Benitez to publicly justify his job. Considering the amount of money he spent on players a couple of years ago and up till now he hasn't produced results. He should emulate Arsene Wengers pattern who has shown that money is not the only necessity to building a team.

livepool have now got to sack Benitez he has took liverpool back ten years get o neil in now and restore some pride

Ciaran Kehoe (Liverpool fan) says...

P45 for Benitez and his love child Lucas. Cant even make it past the group stages now. Manager brought in all these flops, so now he should be held to account. no hope of winning the premiership, out of champs league, out of carling cup and its not even December. Gus Hiddink available now so cmon yanks make the call before we are not even able to make the top 4. Bye bye Rafa

Wiseman Kembo (Liverpool fan) says...

I think Rafa Benitez has run out of ideas and excuses. Today he had only Torres missing and the team's perfomance was pathetic. Even if Fiorentina had failed to get a result against Lyon, what were the chances of Liverpool beating the Italians in the final game. I think Liverpool should look where they want to be at the end of the season and I don't think Benitez should be in the equation.

Alicia White (Liverpool fan) says...

The word shocked comes straight to mind that Liverpool aren't in the Champions league, but they played a great game and no matter what they won, even as it kills me to say at least all there focus will be on the Premiership and I am hoping that Chelsea, Man U and Spurs go on a right losing spree in up and coming games. Miracles have happened before like Cristina Ronaldo been sent to Real Madrid was the best miracle of all no room for his ego in the Premiership. But no matter what Liverpool will come back fighting and if your a true Liverpool fan don't slate the manager he did his best with the team he had once them players are on the pitch its down to them and them only, not Rafa he can't play for them, as much as I want it to be, but this year isn't there year next year is there year. Guarantee it!! I hope!!! finger crossed for this year though!!!!

Enough is enough. We are POOR and RAFA NEEDS SACKING!! GET HIM OUT NOW!

Posted 22:29 24th November 2009

Gary Ryan (Liverpool fan) says...

Just gutted. Not that we are out cause it was out of our hands, but the performance was just so depressing. We should have gone and battered them regardless of what the outcome was going to be. It was a chance to show the whole of Europe that we are better than results have suggested but yet again Rafa takes off our goal scorer and puts on another midfielder. Then he puts on Dossena !!!!! I'm left scratching my head and why did he bother putting on Aquaman for 30 seconds. Time wasting, hanging on to a 1-0 lead against a nohoper team. It's embarrasing to say the least.

Posted 22:26 24th November 2009

Mark Shields (Liverpool fan) says...

This will hopefully force Rafa to own up to his mistakes and buy some new half decent players - having arguably bought some of the worse players ever to play in an LFC shirt. Perhaps the American Owners to blame in this respect?

Andy Coates (Manchester United fan) says...

So Liverpool tried, but it was always going to be hard for them to qualify, as it was not in there own hands. But what would happen if they were to loose against Everton this Sunday, would that be the end of Rafa. ?????

Roger Guthrie (Liverpool fan) says...

Poor! Poor! Very Poor!!! No quality what-so-ever. My team has gone down with a wimper. We need money DESPERATLEY!! to change the 'crap'! that is currently aloud to put on a 'Mighty Reds' shirt. I want to see the back of : Kuyt,Babel,Lucus,Dossena,Veronin & Riera. Bring some quality such as: Matius de Ferdico, ella, Nemeth etc. and some players that has fight and heart!!! Kuyt may have stamina but he has no quality in the final third. Babel, for the potential that we all know he has seems to be mentally week to be able to express himself. Lucus does not have the quality in any department to hold down a first team spot. Dossena is behind Aurellio & Insua and is not good enough in the final third. Veronin is just CRAP!! Riera seems to be going downhill rather than improving. We need attacking players who can 'take on and beat a player', as part of his natural game and has an eye for a pass. However, I think Benitez is still the man for the job (just about) but it is clear that the two cowboys are intent on drowning us. They MUST see by now that football is about keeping up with your competitors and if your not able to then sell to those that can. Lets back the boys anyway and try at least to bring home the 'dog and duck cup'.

Steve James (Liverpool fan) says...

Rafa please go now and put us all out of our misery. You have taken us far as you can and given us some brilliant memories. However we are now going backwards thanks to your mistakes in the transfer market. Youn forced Alonso out of the door through the Barry saga. You then replaced him with Aqualani and yet you still do not play him. You keep saying you have not bought him for 5 weeks but instead 5 years. We may have him for 5 years but buy the time you actually play him we will have nothing to play for. Even a 1% fit Aqualani or even my 80 year olg gran would do a better job than Lucas. Yes Lucas the player that Rafa said can shoot, pass, header, tackle. I think every Liverpool fan in the world will unite and say that this guy can do none of those. He is the worst player ever to play for us and is not fit to wear the Everton shirt never mind ours. Rafa please put us out of our misery and go

Jay B (Real Madrid fan) says...

No Liverpool no Bayern and maybe no Inter, the new qualification format already showing good signs with the likes of Rubin and Unirea qualifying

Posted 22:12 24th November 2009

Jonathan Wilson (Liverpool fan) says...

Now it's time for everyone to realise that Rafa Benitez has to go if Liverpool are to recapture the glory years. An early exit from the CL with one game left shows you how far this team has fallen this year, a year when hopes were high. Rafa has assembled a very average squad that has been very poor all season long both in the league and the CL. First, Liverpool needs new owners. Then a manager that sends a team out to win rather than to not lose should be brought in. Under Benitez Liverpool has played the worst football of any of the top 4 clubs in the PL and have been very negative in their tactics. Time for Rafa to go!

Posted 22:09 24th November 2009

Mark Crossland (Liverpool fan) says...

Too little too late for the reds, there has not been any cutting edge in the team whatsoever so far in any games, either rafa changes the team in january or we'll be in big trouble. I still think we'll make the top four at the end of the season though. AND GET RID OF BABEL FOR GOD'S SAKE
