Lee Westwood will be stepping up his quest for a first major title in 2010.

Westwood claimed the inaugural race to Dubai in 2009 - his second Order of Merit title - and has climbed to a career-best number four in the world rankings.

He has played a leading part in Europe's four Ryder Cup victories since his debut in 1997 and had teed it up in every series, before being controversially left out of the Saturday foursomes by Nick Faldo at Valhalla in 2008.

But after 31 victories around the world, the 36-year-old from Worksop is well aware of the one major omission from his sparkling CV.

Asked about his ambitions for 2010, he told Sky Sports News: "To contend in the majors again, that's the only thing that's not on my CV. I've won Ryder Cups and tournaments all over the world and a major championship is the only thing that is really missing.

"I would like to win one and then try and win another."

Westwood had just one top five finish in majors up to 2008, but since then he has finished third three times - including at the two most recent championsips - last year's Open and USPGA.

The European number one's short game has been something of an Achilles' heel, but he is convinced it is improving. He added: "I am finally getting my head around the short game, which has been lacking over the years and I'm putting more into that because that's not good enough.

"My putting is starting to turn around I am starting to make more putts when it counts."
