Malcolm Glazer: United owner
Manchester United's total debt has risen to £716.5million ($1.17billion), according to accounts released on Wednesday.
The Glazer-family owned Red Football Joint Venture Ltd. has filed accounts that show its total debt for the year ending 30th June, 2009, is £17million higher than the previous year.
United said last week that it had reduced its bank debt to £509million ($829million), but the overall increase is down to the punitive interest rates on its payment-in-kind loans.
That debt increased to £202million ($329million).
The overall debt was not contained in the prospectus United issued last week for a £500million ($815million) bond sale it hopes will allow it to refinance its debt and reduce interest payments.
United paid more than £68million ($110.7million) in interest last year, almost as much as the world-record £80million ($131.7million) it received from Real Madrid in July for Cristiano Ronaldo.
The sale of Ronaldo meant that United made an overall profit of £6.4million ($10.4million), compared to a £42.7million ($59.3million) loss 12 months earlier.
