England manager Martin Johnson has named arguably his boldest attacking team yet ahead of Saturday's RBS Six Nations opener against Wales at Twickenham.

Mathew Tait makes his first international start at outside centre since the 2007 Rugby World Cup final, while Harlequins scrum-half Danny Care reclaims the number nine jersey.

Delon Armitage and Riki Flutey return to the team at full-back and inside centre respectively after England missed their presence during a miserable autumn internationals campaign.

Nick Easter also returns at number eight as one of six changes to the team beaten by New Zealand in November.

Faced with an unprecedented injury list for November's matches against Australia, Argentina and the All Blacks, England's management team effectively went into damage limitation mode.

As a result, England scored just one try in three Tests and all three opponents left Twickenham claiming not to have been stretched.

Johnson acknowledged that mistakes were made and has clearly shifted the emphasis for the Six Nations. The inclusion of Armitage, Tait and Care suggests England will attack Wales with pace.

Full circle

Tait's recall means his career has come full circle since his international debut as a teenage centre against Wales' Grand Slam side of 2005.

Since then he has been moved around the back line, playing on the wing and at full-back but never really given a run in his preferred 13 jersey - except at the 2007 World Cup.

Indeed, he has made just one England start since they lost to South Africa in Paris, at full-back against New Zealand on the 2008 summer tour. His last eight caps have all been as a replacement.

Johnson has admitted that Tait had been mis-used for too long and said that the 23-year-old now has the chance to cement his place in the England midfield.

"I have felt a bit for Tait. It can be a little convenient sometimes to stick him on the bench because he is utility. It is probably a time for him to challenge for that 13 spot," Johnson said last month.

Speaking on Tuesday, Johnson said he was happy to welcome Flutey, Armitage and Easter back into the side - all three having missed the autumn internationals because of injury.

"It is good to get them back," said Johnson.

"With Riki and Delon, we picked them all through last year and they took their chance.

"It was a blow to lose Riki in the autumn. He has trained really well over the last 10 days and fitted right back in.

"Nick's leadership has been vital for us. He is a strength in that area and it is nice to get him back into the group because he is playing well for Harlequins."

Solid defence

Tait replaces Dan Hipkiss and Johnson believes his obvious attacking skills are complemented by a defence solid enough to deal with a Welsh midfield set to include Jamie Roberts.

"There has always been a lot of speculation with Mat. Last season he had his injury issues and he then fitted on to the bench in the Six Nations," said Johnson.

"It is a close call. He is a different player to Dan Hipkiss but he has a good all round game. His defence is under-rated."

Johnson also said that up-and-coming Northampton lock Courtney Lawes was ruled out because of a slight groin injury.

The only position where England are without their first-choice players is at prop, with Andrew Sheridan and Phil Vickery both sidelined for the tournament.

Tim Payne continues at loose-head despite his recent struggles for Wasps while David Wilson packs down at tight-head with Dylan Hartley at hooker.

The England front row boasts a combined total of 33 caps - compared to 162 from Wales' all-Lions Test unit in Gethin Jenkins, Matthew Rees and Adam Jones.

"We have got our hands full there because I rate them a lot," said England scrum coach Graham Rowntree, who worked with the Welsh trio on the Lions tour.

"We can't be overawed by it. They may be a Lions front row but they are a front row coming to Twickenham and that is our house."

The uncapped Leicester prop Dan Cole is on the bench.

England: 15 D Armitage (London Irish); 14 M Cueto (Sale Sharks), 13 M Tait (Sale Sharks), 12 R Flutey (Brive), 11 U Monye (Harlequins); 10 J Wilkinson (Toulon), 9 D Care (Harlequins); 1 T Payne (Wasps), 2 D Hartley (Northampton), 3 D Wilson (Bath), 4 S Shaw (Wasps), 5 S Borthwick (Saracens, capt), 6 J Haskell (Stade Francais), 7 L Moody (Leicester), 8 N Easter (Harlequins).
Replacements: 16 S Thompson (Brive), 17 D Cole (Leicester), 18 L Deacon (Leicester), 19 S Armitage (London Irish), 20 P Hodgson (London Irish), 21 T Flood (Leicester), 22 B Foden (Northampton).

love the look of the backs. thank god tait is in he has been a class act but now he is focused as a centre. forwards look respectable apart from front row Tim Payne is awful he was dominated by Jon Golding in the premiership. The welsh fron row may be the best in the world at this time. no problem at hooker. As for david wilson he is nothing but average. if it was my team i would go with the youth we have at this time and use Jon Golding and Dan Cole although bothe early 20's they are powerhouses and their techniques are perfect. Borthwick is simply not good C.Laws should step in for him. back row looks fine but Phil Dawson is in the form of his life he grafted so hard at newcastle and now at northampton it is opening new experiences for him. but easter will do a good job. all in all i cant wait for the game.

As a Leicester Tigers fan, I'm quite disappointed that Payne has been selected in the front row. Dan Cole out scrummaged him when they faced Tigers at Welford Road. Let's hope that Johnno will be quick to replace Payne if his performance is poor.

Think this is a step in the right direction. Worry about the front row but that's more about who they are up against (strongest part of Welsh team) than their own abilities. Still doubt Borthwick, would have Kennedy in & Lawes (when fit) on the bench. Ok with Care at 9 but prefer Hodgson. Back line looks exciting if quality, quick ball is produced; capable of counter-attacking from the back 3. Doubters of Tait - he can tackle & will hold his own defensively; and he is quality going forward. As for Ashton, he'll get his chance but if he doesn't start then he shouldn't be in the 22 (never have an out & out winger as a replacement); the bench needs a 9, 10/12 & a 15 who can fill in elsewhere. This side is capable of winning on Saturday & winning well as long as they don't succumb to the pressure of losing.I'm ready for an exciting tournament.

Paul Stevens yes we are criticising the selection. I was at the WaspsV Newcastle game when Jon Golding and Carl Hayman did a number on Payne and it wasnt tactical scrummaging he got tortured(9 penalties in 40 mins) and will again on Saturday remember Jon Golding is 23 and not even in the England setup due to who he plays for. And as for getiing behind the team i have tickets for the game and iam travelling down from the North East in total an overall cost of about £400. I will be wearing the Red Rose with pride in the stands on Saturday will you.

Marty H has stated Chris Ashton's try scoring record above. Can you imagine any top Rugby nation anywhere else omitting Ashton for what can only be lack of experience when, with all the experience Monye has, he continues to carry the ball in the wrong hand when it matters?

Team is definatly moving forward, although would still like to see ben foden given his chance and also why has tom varndell not been included in the england squad he has been on fire for wasps this season!!!

Good to see tait has been given a chance and that hipkiss has been given the boot. Gives us that extra attacking edge that we have been lacking. Front row is pretty weak, would of liked to see Cole start. i know its his debut but he's been tearing the front rows of the premiership apart. why not give him a shot? Cant understand why Borthwick keeps gettin picked.. he offers nothing around the pitch.. whilst Lawes and Kennedy are both skillfull enough to be top class second rows.. and take his place. Captaincy would then go to Hartley who is an out and out warrior.

Paul Stevens says...

This is definately a step in the right direction, just a couple of comments for the haters and uneducated, everyone that thinks tim Payne can't scrummage and will be a weak point because of two games is being ridiculous. Against leceister he had a weak 2nd row, was playing a tight-head (he's a loose head) and wasn't getting killed physically he was pulling down tactically, around the loose he has been one of the stand out props in the premiership for years. The pack will give a very good platform for the backs as the tight five are massive and will hold their own all day and the back three are mobile and will break their backs to get to the breakdown. I for one believe that if we want a shot at this tournament we need to stop the football style moaning and criticising and get behind our team!!!!

MJ being slightly bolder with his selection but maybe not quite bold enough. Dan Cole has had an excellent season and should be making the front row on Saturday. (although I think he will have half the game and then win the shirt with his performances from the bench) I also agree that Borthwick isn't the man to lead this team, would have preferred to see Easter Captain and the new dynamic breed of second rower in Lawes start if fit! If I had one wish for this six nations, it would be for ball to be kept in hands but unfortunately I think we will see a Jonny Wilkson drop goal attempt within the opening 5 minutes against wales! Its going to be really close this year, Ireland the team to beat followed very closely by France, England and Wales. Dark horse will be scotland! cant wait for kick-off saturday!

wilkinson still got to be 1st flyhalf on the sheet think people forgetting that we need to keep points scoring ticking over in what will be tight games and there is no better flyhalf under pressure as we have seen over the last few years having tried 4 or so players who have failed to step up to the mark

Jezza Jezza says...

The reason Lawes has not been picked is because he is injured....as for Wilkinson....have you watched any of his matches for Toulon...stands flat and passing out flat balls for attackers to burst onto....in AIs because the ball was so slow he had to stand deep otherwise he would have been flattened every time...as for Borthwick...captain of leadins side in England, always top of stats for line out ball..think the team has a good balance and beleive even with the poor front row, the english will have to much for the welsh and win by 10 points...on wales..Shane Williams having a mare of a time and will be put under immense pressure, as will Halfpenny..Come on England

Duncan Lambert says...

I'd have to agree with Andrew Rennie on the Borthwick selection, as a player at the moment he isn't cutting the mustard, especially when he is being out performed by both young(Lawes) and old(Shaw). In that respect his inclusion is solely based on his leadership capabilities, which is something he has failed to display as I have yet to see him have a captain's performance. Should the Captaincy go to Lewis Moody? Plays with total disregard for his own self preservation and has just as much experience in the big games if not more than Mr Borthwick. I also believe Ashton is worthy of his Shot as although Monye is an excellent player he is having a poor run of form of late. And I hope Care actually runs straight for once! too much running sideways and getting isolated for my liking. All that said at least Martin Johnson has picked a team with a lot more dynamism than during the Autumn internationals which i thought resembled more a team that was selected for damage limitation purposes with the injuries England had instead of a team of young exciting stars that might have caused an upset against the Kiwi's and the Aussie's

This selection smacks of the old pals act - AGAIN. It seems that whenever an opportunity arises, Mr Johnson goes back to his little black book of mates. Steve Thompson is a legend, but havent his best days gone now ? I have nothing against the likes of Wilkinson, Cueto and Tait but you have to ask yourself what someone like Chris Ashton has to do to get selected. This season Ashton is the leading try scorer in the Guinness Premiership, and the leading try scorer in the Heineken Cup overall he has scored 15 tries in 16 games. Last season he was the European Challenge Cup leading try scorer and in 2007 / 8 he set a record number of tries in the National League One. If Johnson wants an attacking line up, look no further than Ashton.

i can't believe MJ picked tim payne, he cant scrummage, and he is playing against one of the best front rows in the world!! he got turned over by a 23 year old who is yet good enough for england so what does that make payne??? poor selection MJ

Jack Cowling says...

Come on guys at least read the article before you start blasting the selection, on tuesday Johnson said that Lawes was ruled out by injury so you cant put that down as a bad selection. Yes our front row is going to get devoured but will hopefully open Johnson's eyes and Cole and co will get their chances further on in the series. I like our backs for the first time in an age tho ashton HAS to be on the bench at the very least. Wilkinson I can understand as Roberts would just run over Flood all day long. I for one shall be shouting the rafters off for the boys come saturday and I hope you all do too!

Ian D-jones says...

It's a shame not to see Ashton on the bench at least. Is it such a brave choice? With big, first choice players returning from injury in the backs, I don't see it as being that bold a move on MJ's part. As for the front row, other than Hartley it's the last chance saloon surely, even if it is versus one of the best front rows in the northern hemisphere. Jury's still out on Wilko, but good to see Flood is available. So, bold and brave? No not really, because it's still missing the opportunity to include the new exciting players that have gone so well in the Premiershp. It is a more attacking option though and lets face it, it's going to have to be!

Bad picks from England: The penalty machine that is Danny Care!!! Borthwick who's not had a good for England game yet!! Monye with hands like feet!! Tait who can't defend to save his life. Roberts will be laughing to himself when he see's who to run at!! Good picks from England: Ben Foden. At last!! Would have been good to see him start though Nick Easter. Good to see him back!! Wilko. Can only get better and will get better!! Failing that Flood is a good replacement to have. Shaw. Great player. Overall I'd say backs look good enouugh to take on any of the home nations. Only weakness has to be Tait. O'Driscoll and Robert's will steam through him all the time. Front row of England's looks a bit weak but should stand it's own. In the second row I can't understand how Borthwick and Deacon keep getting picked ahead of the young lad courtney laws at London Irish!!?? I'd also say the bench is quite weak and would hope we don't get any injuries!!

As an outsider i think this is a great England team to come up against, dont tink wales will be shaking in their boots. Moyne, Moody, Shaw & Hartley are the only class players in the team. Armitage should be there instead of Haskell. if he sticks with this team i fear it will be the end of Martin Johnsons reign!

hhhmmmm 3 problems i see here Tim Payne is im a wasps fan and even can admitt hes not the best loose head steve borthwick what the hell is he doing nick kennedy shawsy would be great 2nd row and danny care he slows the game down sooooo much ben youngs is quick can speed tempo up should be there but better back line as long as its quick ball XD

Andrew Mutton says...

Not a bad team by any means....however, I do not think it is quite as bold a selection as this particular article suggests. Hope Matthew Tait can really prove himself this time, in my mind he hasn't always been convincing as an England player. That said I do not think the selection is overly far from what was picked for the Autumn Internationals.
