Virginie Razzano was an early casualty at the Open GDF Suez in Paris as she was knocked out by Patty Schnyder.

Razzano, seeded seventh, fell to a 6-3 7-6 (7-3) against her experienced Swiss opponent to tumble out of the tournament in the opening round.

Schnyder had missed the Australian Open due to a foot injury but marked her return to the WTA Tour with an impressive victory.

Next up for the world number 44 will be Melanie Oudin, who defeated Romania's Sorana Cirstea 6-3 6-0 despite struggling with a sore throat.

"I was playing really well at the weekend and I played really well today," said the American teenager afterwards.

"My serve was working incredibly well so I am looking forward to my next match."

There were no problems for the fourth-seeded Francesca Schiavone either, as she posted a 'double bagel' 6-0 6-0 result against Vesna Manasieva.

Israel's Shahar Peer, the sixth seed, also advanced courtesy of a 6-4 6-1 triumph over home favourite Alize Cornet in Paris.

Top-seed Elena Dementieva will face fellow Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who beat Iveta Benesova 6-1 6-0 in the second round.
