Schynder: Returning from injury lay-off
Virginie Razzano was an early casualty at the Open GDF Suez in Paris as she was knocked out by Patty Schnyder.
Razzano, seeded seventh, fell to a 6-3 7-6 (7-3) against her experienced Swiss opponent to tumble out of the tournament in the opening round.
Schnyder had missed the Australian Open due to a foot injury but marked her return to the WTA Tour with an impressive victory.
Next up for the world number 44 will be Melanie Oudin, who defeated Romania's Sorana Cirstea 6-3 6-0 despite struggling with a sore throat.
"I was playing really well at the weekend and I played really well today," said the American teenager afterwards.
"My serve was working incredibly well so I am looking forward to my next match."
There were no problems for the fourth-seeded Francesca Schiavone either, as she posted a 'double bagel' 6-0 6-0 result against Vesna Manasieva.
