Cardiff have been told by the High Court that they have 56 days to settle their winding-up order.

The Championship play-off contenders have been struggling off the field for a number of months due to money owed to the taxman.

Financial problems have hampered Dave Jones' side all season, despite their lofty league position, and the Cardiff boss is desperate to settle the dispute.

It is understood that £1.7million is owed to Her Majesty's Customs and Excise and that the club are unable to pay the full amount.

An initial hearing was adjured in February, with Cardiff paying £1m of their £2.7m debt.

The High Court have now set a deadline of 5th May for the Bluebirds and they will be in a race against time to find the required funds.

League One outfit Southend have also been told they have 35 days to settle their winding-up order.

Non-league side Chester City were wound up on Wednesday as a result of an unpaid tax bill.
