Sol Campbell is refusing to give up on his England dream and hopes he could yet make the World Cup cut.

The 35-year-old defender has not featured for his country for more than two years and has never been selected by Fabio Capello.

He does, however, have 73 caps to his name and his experience could be invaluable as the Three Lions go in pursuit of global glory.

Having returned to top-flight action with Arsenal, following a disastrous early-season spell at Notts County, Campbell has put himself back in the frame.

He believes anything is now possible and admits a seat on the plane to South Africa could be his if he can help the Gunners to domestic and European titles.

"You never know," said Campbell.

"I might get a sniff here or there if I keep on playing. Why not?"

Spirit

Campbell has been a regular for Arsenal of late, following an injury to William Gallas, and made his first appearance back at Emirates Stadium in Tuesday's 5-0 demolition of Porto.

He admits he needs to step up his fitness if he is to remain an integral part of Arsene Wenger's plans, but is keen to play as often as possible before his short-term deal expires at the end of the season.

"If required I have to do something about it to keep it going," he said.

"I'm level-headed, I'm not going to get carried away, but it's great to be back and in this kind of environment. I'm going to relish the moments and respect the situation I'm in and give everything I've got every time I play for Arsenal.

"The spirit is fantastic here, we missed a couple of players against Porto, but whoever comes in, as the boss says, is chipping in and putting a shift in and ploughing ahead.

"Every game between now and the end of the season is like a cup final. The manager wants us to fight for every minute and every second for the rest of the season."

Sol's quality and commitment are not in doubt. It would appear that he is even faster than John Terry presently but my worry is, will the "thing" that made him walk away by half-time during a match in 2006 not make him walk away again? Somebody please amswer me!.

I Agree with sol, i think if he can stay fit and play regularly for arsenal, then he will definetly play for england at the world cup. and also he has loads of experience so that would help england. i think sol is a fantastic defender and i really hope he makes the england squad for the world cup

Andy Wallwork (Newcastle United fan) says...

This is a joke, right??? Whenever the ball is at his feet, Campbell acts like it's a hot potato and cannot wait to get rid of it, doesn't matter where, or who to. This would be the craziest decision England have ever made if he was selected for the World Cup squad.

Micky Dawson (Tottenham Hotspur fan) says...

Get real Sol!...His performance for Arsenal when he has played have been shocking...even last night although they won 5-0 against a poor Porto, he consistently made errors. Lucky for him he is surrounded by better players to carry him! Notts County was more his standard.....Dawson for England any day over Sol!

Nick Medhurst (Arsenal fan) says...

Why not? Toe-poke aside, he's been superb. Strong, fit, switched-on and organisationally brilliant. A really welcome calm, mature head at the back with Gallas out. The contrast with Silvestre shows how much quality he has left. Obviously he needs to keep at this level consistently but if he does I don't see why Upson et al should be starting ahead of him. His experience could be key at the World Cup - Maldini style.

Dean James (Manchester United fan) says...

There are far better and younger defenders available to Mr. Cappello. His England career was Sol over a long time ago..

Sukhdev Hansra (Everton fan) says...

Watched Campbell against Porto and I thought he had a bit of a shocker. Lucky his teammates were amazing around him. Too many times he could not win the ball, or kepp control of it. It looks like Terry, Ferdinand and Upson are going considering the people Capello has been picking. I think the forth place will go to Jagielka if he keeps playing the way he has since he has come back. Seems like he never left - assured and a great tackler. Would be a shame if he took Lescott's place!

Roland Watson (Arsenal fan) says...

Could do a lot worse than Campbell. He was great in the first leg of Porto, although was under the kosch a bit in the secon d leg, but i think he has proved that he can still play with the best of them. Compared to certain people already in the England team, his dream may not be to far away- especially if Capello sticks to only picking people in form (although that was proved to be a load of rubbish when Terry was picked when his form was appalling).
