Quotes of the week

Dwain Chambers quest for a gold medal at the World Indoor Championships in Doha became easier after American rival Ivory Williams tested positive for marijuana.

Williams has been banned for three months after providing the positive sample following his victory in the trial race in Albuquerque last month.

Williams' world best time this season of 6.49secs for the 60m has now been erased from the record books while his place in the USA team will be taken by Trell Kimmons.

Chambers, who shared the silver medal in Valencia two years ago, is now strongly tipped to become the second Briton to take gold in the dash following Jason Gardener in 2004.

His lifetime best of 6.42secs, which won him last year's European title, is vastly superior to his opponents, while the 6.50 he clocked when winning the trials last month is now the best in the world this year.

Smarter

"Going in with the fastest time in the world you think you are ahead of the field and everybody, but I've got to use my brain a little bit smarter how I approach this situation," said the reformed drugs cheat.

"On one hand I'd love to live up to it because of what I did last year, but I can't approach it thinking I want to run faster.

"I just have to make sure I am one step ahead of everybody else. I know in my mind I am a lot stronger mentally - to me that's a key, when you are on the start line.

"It's not about your physical preparation it's your mental. You train your mind not your body - so as long as my mind is in the right place the other should fall into place.

"I have to make sure I take every round step by step and again I know I can rely on my experience, I have been doing it for a long time, since I was 14 years old, so hopefully that's going to serve me in the final."
