Rafa Benitez has responded to Albert Riera's criticism by leaving the winger out of his squad for the Europa League match against Lille.

Riera launched a scathing attack on the Liverpool manager earlier on Thursday after becoming frustrated with his lack of opportunities in recent months.

The Spain international accused Benitez of not communicating well with his squad, saying his 'dialogue with the players is practically nil'.

Riera has made just two appearances since January, most recently coming on as a substitute in last week's 1-0 defeat to Lille.

But he will play no part in the return leg at Anfield on Thursday night as Liverpool look to progress to the quarter-finals of Europe's second competition.

It is understood that Riera will not be considered for Sunday's crucial Premier League encounter at Manchester United either.

Although it is not thought to be an official suspension, reports suggest Riera has been asked to stay away from the training ground until Monday.
