Skysports.com understands Birmingham skipper Stephen Carr is close to signing a new deal at St Andrews.

Carr has been a massive success at Birmingham since his shock move to the club in February 2009.

The 33-year-old came out of retirement to join Birmingham and he helped them win promotion back to the Premier League.

Carr made 40 appearances for the Blues last season and he remains a key member of Alex McLeish's first-team plans.

The former Newcastle and Tottenham star's current deal has just one-year to run on it and Birmingham are ready to offer him a two-year extension to keep him at St Andrews.
