Robert Cowell's Prohibit (9-2) was brought with a perfectly timed run by Jamie Spancer to land the Scarbrough Stakes, the feature race on the opening day of the St Leger metting.

The five-year-old was just touched off in the Beverley Bullet last time out and confirmed form with those behind him that day, swooping late to beat Richard Fahey's Rose Blossom (5-1) by threequarters of a length.

The 15-8 favourite Group Therapy was a further half-length away in third with Captain Dunne fourth.

"There's a possibility he might go straight to France for the Abbaye now as he's in such good form," said Cowell.

"He seems to have improved hand over fist and is very consistent.

"There's a Group Three at Newmarket in 10 days we might have a look at.

"I do nothing with him at home, sometimes he won't be sat on between races, he might just do a hack canter.

"I think sprinters should be 90% fit and 10% fresh but that is just me. I picked it up when working with Neil Drysdale in America."

Hanagan brace

Champion-elect Paul Hanagan hit the mark on his 30th birthday when he initiated a double on Barefoot Lady (3-1) to victory in the AJ Webb & Son Fresh Produce Suppliers Conditions Stakes.

The Fahey-trained filly dug deep and found more to win by a length and a quarter and make it two wins from as many outings.

"Norman (Steel, owner) picked her out himself and said she was decent and she's won two out of two," said Fahey. "She'll go for the Firth Of Clyde at Ayr next, she's very smart.

"I didn't know it was Paul's birthday, it's not the sort of stuff we talk about.

I read somewhere that I've been like a father figure to him but I'm only 44 and if he's 30 that means I was 14 when I had him!"

Hanagan made it two for the day when he drove Myplacelater (22-1) to an unlikely victory in the Wilson Field Neurocare Conditions Stakes.

Wigmore Hall appeared to have the race in the bag inside the final furlong after Jamie Spencer delivered the progressive gelding with what looked like a well-timed challenge.

However, the three-year-old began to tire in the closing stages and was caught right on the line by Myplacelater, with Godolphin's Al Zir a one-paced third.

Buzzy

"She is a decent filly," said trainer David Elsworth. "We ran her at Goodwood last time but we didn't get a true reflection of what she might be able to do over further.

"She was a bit toey in the paddock and I almost took her out there as she was a bit buzzy. She had run a couple of weeks before. Today she was relaxed and she switched off.

"I will probably put her away now. This is her first season. She still looks a little bit on the leg and I think she'll improve next year."

There was a 25-1 surprise in the opening race of the Doncaster St Leger meeting as Whisper Louise flew home late to win the Arena Structures Nursery.

One of the more exposed runners in the field on paper, the Pam Sly-trained filly appreciated the step up to seven furlongs more than most.

Byronic appeared to have the race put to bed a furlong out but he began to tire and veered towards the rail, unfortunately for his connections though, there was just enough room for Micky Fenton to drive his mount through to win by a neck in a blanket finish.
