Sky Sports News understands that Liverpool have renewed their interest in West Ham striker Carlton Cole.

A representative of the Anfield club is said to have been at the Hammers' Boxing Day victory over Fulham at Craven Cottage, where the 27-year-old scored twice in a 3-1 win.

Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson made an attempt to sign England international Cole, who has netted just five times in all competitions this season, in the summer transfer window.

But a deadline day deal was not agreed and West Ham boss Avram Grant remains unwilling to sell his star players, such as Cole, Matthew Upson and Scott Parker, as he battles against Premier League relegation.

No secret

However, it is understood that Hammers co-owners David Gold and David Sullivan would be prepared to listen to offers between £7m and £9m.

Hodgson has made no secret of the fact that he wants to increase his attacking options and find a partner for Fernando Torres to decrease the burden on the Spain international.

The Liverpool boss is desperate to be backed in the transfer window by his club's owners, John Henry's New England Sports Ventures, following their takeover in mid-October and he has also been linked with PSV Eindhoven forward Ola Toivonen.

But, whether or not it is a poker face to misguide rivals, Hodgson has also said that he does not expect to sign any 'first-team material' until the end of January.

Seriously guys Cole won't be going to Anfield. What I find most disturbing about this Hodgson team is that he seems unable to motivate them. Tactics take time but motivation takes minutes. Torres appears not to want to be there and when he's not on the pitch playing badly he is injured. I would honestly question whether he has the correct attitude to get the Reds out of this. I think Hodgson needs to look at his motivation techniques or cash in now on Torres and get two lesser but decent strikers to replace him. And no, Cole isn't one of them !!!

Dahnyaal Syed (Liverpool fan) says...

If we do buy him, it will do for the time being, buying one striker is better than none, and this guy can score goals in premierleague football, so atleast we can have a recongnized striker to back up Fernando Torres, this can only improve us, then maybe in summer we can add to that, as january is a hard time to get big star players!

Why Cole ? He's 26 his best days are behind him and he's always been bad. 3 signings that would save the club Eden hazard or nzogbia. Lorrente or suraz. Then the Brazilian left back bastos.

Davy Lewis (Liverpool fan) says...

Why are people making roy out to be a bad manager, yes hes made some rubbish signings but he has also made good ones, dont forget he inherited a team from a manager who "built" a team up to finish in 6th or watever it was. we need to give roy time, we rnt a top 4 team any more, but we will be a number one team. its a building process, doesnt matter if it is roy or mourinho at the helm, always going to take time. yes fair enough cole isnt the most prolific goal scorer but look at crouch look at how well he holds the ball up etc, theres other uses. theres all these names being linked with liverpool fc but we will have to buy yung players who have a bright future, dont be tinking that even 1 outstanding world class player can change the fortunes in january, coz the liverpool history doesnt attract these players if there isnt going to be champions league or lucrative deals on offer. Roy to stay!

Terry Reid (Liverpool fan) says...

Signing Cole would be an enormous gamble, if we don't have the money to strengthen the squad with the cash liggers employed by Rafa and Roy then as much as it breaks my heart, its time to sell Torres. We need to be realistic, rebuilding takes time and we are a mid table club aspiring to reach the top four not a top four club aspiring to win the EPL.

Paul H (West Ham United fan) says...

Carlton Cole is very hit and and miss and i do not consider him a particularly good player but he does occasionally surprise me, despite this he would be a flop at liverpool. I like Roy Hodgson but it would not be in there interests to spend 8 million on cole, I cant really see his logic. If he wants an english striker maybe look at bent or Carroll! Or as mentioned earlier dzeko or suarez

Steve Naas (Liverpool fan) says...

buying cole would be just like buying morientes again, could not score in an empty net.if this rumour is true so much for hodgson strengthening the squad,id rather see keane back or carew.

Sean G (Newcastle United fan) says...

give roy a chance!!!!! i think that although cole isnt brilliant he offers something different in attack and i actually believe torres could do well with cole
