Manager Paul Sturrock felt Southend made life difficult for themselves despite securing their first victory this season against Wycombe.
On-loan striker Britt Assombalonga netted his second goal in consecutive matches with a seventh-minute header after Matt Spring cleared Ryan Cresswell's header.
Southend dominated the first half and created a number of chances, but the Essex side were unable to add to that early goal.
Wycombe struggled to make an impact in the first half, but got going in the second and that made for a tense afternoon for Sturrock.
"We made it difficult for ourselves and missed a couple of good chances to make it 2-0," said Sturrock. "John Spicer should have scored and when he didn't you start to worry," he added, referring to Spicer's shot early in the second half which was saved by Nikki Bull.
"With the results we've had there's probably a bit of confidence lacking and that showed in the second half. The tempo wasn't right but I was very pleased with the first half and especially how we started."
