Nemanja Vidic wants Manchester United to prove their quality against Liverpool after suggesting the game is 'everything' to their arch rivals.

United have failed to win on their last five visits to Anfield in all competitions, having won four of the previous six meetings on Merseyside.

Liverpool have endured a stuttering start to the current campaign, but United captain Vidic is expecting a tough game on what will be an emotional afternoon.

"Over the last few years we have gone there when we have been chasing the title and they are always behind," said the defender.

"Sometimes that game is everything for them as it is a chance to prove they are a good team. Maybe they are stronger because of that.

"We should be thinking the same and go there to prove we are a good team."

The Red Devils have recovered from an opening game defeat at Everton to record three wins in a row to sit a point behind early Premier League leaders Chelsea.

Vidic knows exactly what to expect at Liverpool and has warned that United cannot allow any more early points to slip through their grasp.

He added: "We cannot afford to drop any points.

"At the start of the season you don't want to drop points and be too far away from other teams like Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal.

"Being solid is always the key thing at Anfield. It is a tight pitch, so we have to defend well because we have players who can score goals."
