Former runner-up Viktor Troicki snapped a three-match losing streak to progress to the second round of the Thailand Open.

Sixth-seed Troicki, a beaten finalist at the Bangkok-based tournament in 2009, battled back from a set down to defeat Ukraine's Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-7 (4/7) 7-5 6-3.

It was a welcome win for world number 31 Troicki, who was knocked out in the first rounds of his previous two tournaments at the US Open and Winston-Salem.

"I'm happy with this first-round performance," said the Serb who will play either Gael Monfils or Kevin Anderson in the next round.

"No matter whom I play in the next round, it will be a tough match again for sure. I hope I can keep playing as well as I did today," he added.

Finn Jarkko Nieminen, also a beaten finalist at the event, progressed after just 35 minutes when Japan's Yuichi Sugita retired after losing the opening set 6-1.

Troicki and Nieminen were joined in the second round by fifth seed Fernando Verdasco, who battled back from a set down to defeat Tatsuma Ito 3-6 6-0 6-2 and Israeli Dudi Sela, who overcame Swiss Marco Chiudinelli 6-4 6-4.

Also on Tuesday, Japanese qualifier Hiroki Moriya picked up his first ATP Tour win this year when he beat Dutchman Robin Haase 2-6 7-6 (8/6) 6-3, while

Bernard Tomic of Australia ousted ailing 2010 champion Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-0 6-2.
