Rebecca Adlington has defended the performance of GB swimming team at the London Olympics, believing they are improving heading towards Rio.

While London 2012 was overwhelmingly positive for Team GB, for the swimmers it fell short of expectation after they won three medals - a silver in the 200 metres breaststroke for Michael Jamieson and two bronze medals from Adlington.

This was below the base target of five set with UK Sport and was just half the number won in Beijing, although three of those were in the open water in 2008.

But Adlington, who has admitted she 'might be a bit past it' herself to compete in Rio, thinks the team is improving and the future looks bright heading towards Brazil in four years' time.

"We are improving, it is the right step, so hopefully those guys in Rio that made a semi or final push it on to make the podium."

She said: "For me it was never realistic the swimmers were going to go in and get the same amount of medals as the cyclists and rowers.

"They were never going to get eight, nine gold medals, swimming is not that kind of sport for us.

"But in Beijing we got three medals, this time we got three medals. Yeah, they weren't the same colour but we still got the three.

"We are improving, it is the right step, so hopefully those guys in Rio that made a semi or final push it on to make the podium."
