Heather Watson: A constant threat to the Hercog serve
Heather Watson booked her place in the second round of the HP Open in Osaka with a 6-4 6-4 victory over Polona Hercog.
The British number two carved out 10 break points against the Slovenian, taking three of them, to win through in an hour and 29 minutes.
The world number 71 picked up a crucial break in the opening set but had to break twice in the second after Hercog capitalised on her only opportunity of the match.
But it was a solid start by the 20-year-old from Guernsey, who will next play either sixth seed Anabel Medina Garrigues or Camila Giorgi.
Top seed Samantha Stosur progressed on Monday with a 6-4 6-2 victory over Japan's Erika Sema, converting five of six break points.
American Jamie Hampton beat Ayumi Morita of Japan 6-3 6-2 while Australian Casey Dellacqua also put paid to local hopes, this time defeating veteran Kimiko Date-Krumm 6-3 3-6 6-4.
However, Misaki Doi provided some cheer for home fans by ousting American Julia Cohen 7-5 3-6 6-0.
British number one Laura Robson, seeded eighth this week, gets her campaign underway on Tuesday against Eleni Daniilidou of Greece.
