Former Hannover and Albania midfielder Altin Lala has been forced to hang up his boots at the age of 36 due to a knee injury.

Lala left Hannover last summer after making 294 appearances and joined Bayern Munich to captain their reserve team.

But after just three appearances this term, he has decided to call time on his career.

"I regret it very much that he is no longer available to us," said the coach of Bayern's reserve team, Mehmet Scholl, on his club's official website.

"He was a great guy and a top sportsman and all of us at Bayern Munich hope that he can make a full recovery and we wish him all the best for his future."

Lala was capped 80 times by Albania and was part of the Hannover side which gained promotion to the Bundesliga in 2002, remaining with them as their longest-serving player before moving on last June.
