Two-time champion and home favourite Jurgen Melzer was dumped out of the Erste Bank Open in Vienna after a 6-3 3-6 7-6 (7-4) second-round loss to Gilles Muller.

The Austrian struggled as Luxembourg's Muller sent down 18 aces before edging the tight contest in a final-set tie-break.

After coming back from a set down to level the contest, Melzer went 0-3 behind in the decider but once again hit back to force the breaker.

However, Muller once again took control against the fourth seed and some more big serves set the 29-year-old up to complete the upset.

"I had trouble with my first serves and he was serving very well. He had some real bombs. It was not my day out there. I'm sorry to lose so early, especially at home where I've had success," Muller said.

Top seed Juan Martin del Potro was also pushed all the way but eventually came through to claim a 6-7 (5-7) 7-6 (7-4) 7-6 (8-6) win against Daniel Brands in a match which featured 59 aces and no breaks of serve.

Fifth seed Fabio Fognini was sent crashing out of the tournament as he suffered a 7-6 (10-8) 6-3 defeat to Donald Young in the first round.

Also in the first round, Austrian Dieter Thiem gave the home crowd something to cheer about as he beat Lukas Lacko 7-6 (7-3) 6-3.
