A man has been arrested over a racist comment on Facebook allegedly directed at Shola Ameobi.

The 43-year-old, from Washington, Tyne and Wear, was held overnight on suspicion of racial harassment and has been bailed until November 28.

It is the second time that the Newcastle striker has been the victim of racist abuse on the social media site, following a complaint made to police in February 2012.

Ameobi's younger brother Sammy was racially abused on Twitter in 2011 by two teenagers who subsequently received warnings from the police.

The arrest comes just a couple of days before Sunday's Wear-Tyne derby between Sunderland and Newcastle at the Stadium of Light.

Northumbria Police said the post has now been removed.
