Matt Kenseth snatched his third win of the season after edging Martin Truex Jnr in a sprint finish at the Hollywood Casino 400 in Kansas.
Kenseth took the checkered flag less than half-a-second ahead of Truex in a race marred by a track-record 14 yellow flags, adding up to 66 laps under caution.
The slick, new surface at the Kansas Speedway claimed a number of casualties, with Jimmie Johnson's bid for a sixth Sprint Cup title taking a huge blow when he spun and crashed on lap 135.
Johnson had led for 44 laps despite being a lap behind when the yellow flags came out after Aric Almirola hit the wall at turn two.
Johnson did manage to salvage a ninth-place finish, one place behind Sprint Cup Series leader Brad Keselowski.
But it was Kenseth who best survived the on-track carnage as he picked up the 24th win of his 468-race career.
Paul Menard claimed third ahead of pole-sitter Kasey Kahne, while Tony Stewart rallied from 33rd place on the grid to snatch a creditable fifth.
