Sunderland captain Lee Cattermole has signed a new contract keeping him at the club until 2016.
The 24-year-old, who joined from Wigan in 2009, has played 80 games for the club.
Cattermole began his career at Middlesbrough, making his first-team debut aged just 17 before spending a season at the DW Stadium.
The midfielder is convinced the club are moving in the right direction and had no hesitation in committing his future to Martin O'Neill's side.
"I'm delighted to have signed the new deal," he told the club's official website.
"The gaffer made it clear at the end of last season that he wanted me at the club and I'm glad to get it done.
"If you look at the signings we've made over the summer, I think it shows the club's ambition. I think this is the best place for me."
Pleased
O'Neill said of the new deal: "I am pleased. He's a very good captain and is excellent in the dressing room with the players.
"I think now he needs to look at his own game in terms of discipline and maybe just feeling he can settle down now.
"He's committed himself to the football club which as I say I'm very pleased with. We're hoping now that we can get him on the field more often than off it."
