Hull Stingrays booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Challenge Cup courtesy of a 4-3 win over Cardiff Devils in south Wales.
Stingrays scored three unanswered goals during a dominant first period through Jason Silverthorn (6.48), Jereme Tendler (9.53) and Cale Tanaka (18.35).
Tom Squires, signed earlier on Thursday on a two-way deal from Sheffield Steeldogs, marked his debut with a goal to put Stingrays 4-0 up at 24.01.
But two quickfire powerplay strikes from Chris Blight (27.50) and player-coach Gerad Adams (31.30) saw Devils half the deficit and prompt a Stingrays time-out.
Devils closed to within one goal thanks to a third powerplay goal from Mac Faulkner (46.38) but, despite calling a time-out and pulling goaltender Phil Osaer, they could not force overtime as Stingrays held on for their first away win this season.
