David Ferrer opened the defence of his ATP Copa Claro title with a routine 6-4 6-1 victory over Agustin Velotti in Buenos Aires.
The Argentinean wild-card did put up a stern challenge in the opening set, rallying from 4-1 down to level matters thanks to three games in a row.
However, Federer took the next two to win the set and then cruised through the second, a pair of breaks being enough to send him through to round two.
"I was ready to get going, and get going with a victory," Ferrer said afterwards. "There are no easy matches, although our rankings were not very even."
The fourth seed is looking to win the second tournament of the season, having previously triumphed this uear in Auckland.
Next up for Ferrer will be another home player, David Nalbandian, who knocked out fellow Argentine Carlos Berlocq 6-3 2-6 6-3.
"In the second set I lost some intensity, and he (Berlocq) picked up his game," Nalbandian said. "Luckily, I was able to come back and win the third set."
In another first-round match postponed from Tuesday because of rain, sixth-seeded Italian Fabio Fognini defeated Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain 7-5 6-3.
Marco Trungelliti got the better of Facundo Arguello in an all-Argentine battle, the latter having to pull out of the contest when trailing 1-0 at the start of the third and final set.
