Australia flanker David Pocock may miss out on facing the British & Irish Lions this summer because of a knee injury.

The 24-year-old open-side, who has captained the Wallabies in the past, was carried off in the 13th minute of the Brumbies' 35-6 Super Rugby win over the Waratahs with what appeared to be ligament damage.

Subsequent scan results confirmed that Pocock is likely to need surgery having collided with international team-mate Adam Ashley Cooper and falling awkwardly to the turf.

He said via his Twitter account: "Not the best news with the scan. I'm going to have to see the surgeon Monday. Really appreciate all the tweets..."

Waratahs' back-rower Michael Hooper and Liam Gill of the Reds would be the leading contenders to step into the Australia XV should Pocock miss out, with veteran George Smith a dark horse having left Japan and returned to the Brumbies on a short-term deal.

Australia welcome the touring Lions to Suncorp Stadium for the opening Test match on June 22.
