Newcastle defender Steven Taylor admits he is still dreaming of winning a call-up to the England squad.

The 27-year-old centre-back has reportedly attracted the attention of national team boss Roy Hodgson after a series of consistent displays for the Magpies.

Taylor, whose progress has been hampered by injury in recent seasons, got close to his Three Lions debut when he was an unused substitute against Germany in 2007.

And the former England Under 21 player remains hopeful the long wait could be over soon.

"It's flattering to hear people talk about me and England," said Taylor, quoted in The Sun.

"It's amazing because of the amount of times I've tried to get in the squad.

"Even last season I tried and it didn't happen but I must keep plugging away with Newcastle and maintain my form."

"I hope with the help of my team-mates it'll get me there.

"I feel more consistent. I started well last season and have taken off in the current campaign.

"I got injured against Chelsea but since coming back I've been in great shape. If I stay injury free I'll keep my fingers crossed.

"It's been hard work in the gym but it has helped me out a lot."
