Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has become the first international player to sign up for the Caribbean Premier League.

Ponting, 38, who retired from international cricket in December, will appear for the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League and then move on to Surrey for the first two months of the county season where he will cover for Graeme Smith who will be away with South Africa.

Ponting will then head for the Caribbean in late July though he will not find out which team he is playing for until the draft in May.

Antigua & Barbuda, Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, St Lucia and Trinidad & Tobago are the competing teams.

In 168 Tests Ponting scored 13,378 Test runs, another 13,704 runs in 375 ODIs and 401 runs in 17 T20 internationals.

"The West Indies has always been one of my favourite cricket destinations," said Ponting. "The mix of entertainment and cricket is the perfect recipe for West Indian cricket fans as well as the rest of the world."

The CPL is scheduled to take place from July 29 to August 26.
