Ross County midfielder Paul Lawson believes the team have surpassed all expectations this season.

County are still in the hunt for second place in the league in their first season in the top flight of Scottish football.

And Lawson admits it will be a major disappointment should the Staggies falter in the remainder of the campaign after making great strides in the last couple of years.

"We've probably done better than a lot of people thought," Lawson said.

"Many predicted we would finish near the bottom of the table - but we have catapulted into the top six. We just want to do our best to stay there now.

"Considering the size of the club we've done very well. Every player has played their part, we haven't let ourselves down.

"Ask any supporter - it's been a great season so far, we don't want to go out with a whimper - we want to finish as high as we can."

Lawson will be out of contract with the Staggies at the end of the season - but the former Celtic youngster admits he would be more than happy to extend his stay at the club.

"You could say we are playing for a new deal at the moment," Lawson added. "In a way the season has just started for me, but I'm very happy here as are a lot of the boys.

"Sometimes circumstances can change things. But we've just got to keep working hard in training and when the time comes, produce the performance which will see us secure a top six finish."
