Eighth seed Caroline Garcia missed out on a quarter-final spot at the WTA Bell Challenge in Quebec City after suffering a three-set defeat to Christina McHale.
Garcia raced through the first set but missed out on wrapping up the victory as McHale won the tiebreak.
And with the momentum now in her favour, McHale went on to win 2-6 7-6 (9-7) 6-3 in two hours 12 minutes.
McHale will now face the in-form Polona Hercog in the last eight. Hercog ousted top seed Kirsten Flipkens in the first round and the Slovenian maintained her impressive form with a 6-0 6-2 rout of Julie Coin.
Marina Erakovic, the sixth seed, also enjoyed an emphatic straight-sets victory as she beat Barbora Zahlavova Strycova 6-2 6-1.
Fifth-seeded Eugenie Bouchard did not have it all her own way in her first-round tussle with Sofia Arvidsson but eventually won 6-1 2-6 7-6 (7-0) to set up a clash with qualifier Sesil Karatantcheva.
Andrea Hlavackova was pushed all the way by Anastasia Rodionova in the first two sets of their first-round encounter, but dominated the third en route to a 7-6 (7-3) 5-7 6-1 win.
Also in round one, Petra Martic toppled Lucie Hradecka 6-4 7-6 (7/1).
