Holders Atletico Madrid and third-tier Racing Santander advanced to the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey on Tuesday evening at the expense of Valencia and Almeria, respectively.

Diego Simeone had vowed heading into the second leg of the last-16 tie that his side's defence of their cup crown would not take a backseat just because they were doing well in the Primera Division and Champions League.

And his team proved as good as his word, with second-half goals from Diego Godin and Raul Garcia earning a 2-0 victory over Los Che at the Vicente Calderon - a 3-1 success on aggregate.

Valencia's disappointing evening was compounded by the last-minute dismissal of midfielder Dani Parejo.

Racing advanced in similar fashion, with second-half goals from Mariano and Ruben Duran sinking top-flight Almeria 2-0 on the night and 3-1 overall.
