England batsman Joe Root has been named one of Wisden's Five Cricketers of the Year.

The 23-year-old, who only made his international debut just over a year ago, joins England women's captain Charlotte Edwards, Australia duo Ryan Harris and Chris Rogers, and destructive India opener Shikhar Dhawan in the list.

South Africa fast bowler Dale Steyn, meanwhile, has been named Wisden's Leading Cricketer in the World.

Yorkshireman Root, who made his Test debut in December 2012, has been rewarded for an excellent maiden summer last year, impressing in England's successful Ashes series before finishing the season as the country's leading batsman.

The almanack, published on Wednesday, said: "Two memorable innings helped Joe Root become the leading English batsman in the national averages.

Excellent

England captain Charlotte Edwards has enjoyed an excellent year

"He was the first Yorkshire player to make his maiden Test century at Headingley when he took 104 off New Zealand in May, and he then became the youngest England batsman to score an Ashes hundred at Lord's - with 180 in July."

England women's skipper Edwards, meanwhile, becomes only the second woman to win the prestigious award after her compatriot Claire Taylor five years ago. She led her side to back-to-back Ashes victories home and away in the space of six months in 2013.

Australia bowler Ryan Harris also had an excellent summer last year despite his side's defeat in England, and he continued to be a constant threat as Australia whitewashed England 5-0 in the return Ashes series over the winter. Batsman Rogers has also been rewarded for his efforts in both series.

India batsman Dhawan, 28, has emerged as a real talent in Test cricket following the retirements of a number of senior India batsman last year including Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid.
