West Indies have named wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin as the new captain of their Test team.

The 29-year-old will replace all-rounder Darren Sammy who will continue as the Twenty20 skipper.

Sammy was appointed Test captain in 2010 and led them to series victories over Bangladesh, Zimbabwe and New Zealand.

However, the team have lost five of their last six Test matches to leave Sammy with an overall record of eight wins and 12 defeats.

Ramdin will take charge of West Indies for the first time in the three-Test home series against New Zealand, starting in Jamaica on June 8.

The Trinidadian right-hander has played 56 Tests, scoring 2,235 runs at an average of 27.25, including four centuries, and taking 156 catches.

Ramdin said: "It is an honour to be named as captain of the West Indies Test team. This is a huge opportunity and as a unit we are capable of representing the people of the West Indies.

"I am taking over from Darren who did a good job while he was at the helm. He is a very humble and hard working cricketer and during his time at the helm he gave his all to the job.

"My first assignment will be against New Zealand at home and this promises to be a very exciting series."

West Indies Cricket Board president Dave Cameron said: "We thank Darren for his energetic and resolute leadership over the past four years and we continue to see his role as the Twenty20 captain as a critical one."

West Indies now have three separate captains for the three formats of the game with Dwayne Bravo the one-day international skipper.
